C-4 That's all I have to say about that.
Yeah, I really enjoyed playing through it as well. I played it on and off on Super Mario All Stars when I was younger, but never had enough interest in it to try and beat it. In fact, I never even tried until this year because, to be honest, I was a little intimidated by it. After going through the 3 SMB games for the 30 x 30 challenge, I thought to mysel that I was actually pretty good at SMB and since the Japanese SMB2 was designed for people who mastered the original, I figured why don't I at least give it an honest effort. I played through a world or two per night until I finished it and I really regretted not trying it long ago. It's actually a lot of fun. I'm happy to say that I beat it without save states or cheats, but I have to admit that I was using the "lost levels" version on All Stars which is a little easier than the FDS version because you can continue at the same level that you lost your last life at. Also, you get to go to World A after beating it one time, which was important because I sure as hell wasn't going to beat it 8 times, or whatever you had to do on the FDS version.
Better late than never. And yeah man, C-4 was the level I was thinking of. That second flame wheel in the pit was ridiculous.
I heard that you had to beat levels 1 through 8 in one sitting to get A-D, but that must not be true. I beat mine on All-Stars and a regular SNES as well, but I had to get up a couple of times and walk away because of levels like C-4. Absolutely maddening. B-3 was a pain, too.
I didn't know that you had to beat it more than once to get to World A on the FDS version. I wonder if it's the same way in the GBA rerelease.
You get to world 9 if you don't warp in the original FDS version. I believe that applies to the lost levels too, but I can't confirm because I never tried to warp since I wanted to be able to say I completed every level. World 9 was crazy easy. My understanding was that it was meant as a tribute to the minus world in the original game since it takes place mostly under water.
You get to worlds A through D by beating the game 8 times in the original FDS version, but in the lost levels, you get to them simply by beating the game once. C-4 was definitely tricky. Originally, I figured that I wouldn't be able to beat it unless I could get to the second flame while I was big, and just take the hit and move on. However, I finally figured out how to get through it small pretty consistently. I never made it through there big (although I've seen it done online).
