As of recently, the unreleased version of Strider for the FC has been dumped by Arasoi and a hack "which makes it better" is in WIP stage. When it's finished, it will be sold as a repro with the choice of 72/60 pin cart. After he has gained enough money, he will release the unaltered dump in his will.

Info of the hack (gained across the web):

-Translation of lyrics and text
-Ninja Gaiden wall sticking
-Bugfixes and lots of bugfixes
-Horizontal boxes readded, has border and scrolling.

I wouldn't even know how to buy something from Yahoo Japan.  Do you have a proxy that you could recommend?

Meh, I thought we all agreed these ones were copies?

I'm thinking they're original prototypes honestly. Well, at least the two or three that look similar. I don't think any true reproductions of the prototype have been produced. I've seen some reproductions, but they're using a different rom than the images in these auctions. I was under the impression that they were translations of the English rom.

For what it is worth this auction has been up for at least a few weeks and obviously no one has bid any of the times that he has relisted it. He could possibly lower the price in the future, but who knows.

There is an American proxy that supports the Yahoo JP auctions called Buyee.

Damn dude, way to be bossy when trying to get someone to drop $1.5k on a game that you want him to distribute for free.

Haha, oh well

I'm kinda surprised to see the sudden interest in this listing. It has been offered for long enough that I'd figure any interested parties would have already known and bought it (or thought it to be priced too high), but I guess not! Hopefully whoever wins enjoys it. Not really my cup of tea honestly, but maybe if the person in this thread who is bidding on it wins (which I am pretty sure he will unless his bid catches the attention of other parties who were waiting with hopes of the seller lowering the price) he will like it!

I wonder if Capcom ever seriously considered trying to port the arcade game to the NES, I mean they did it for the Master System and all.

Capcom didn't handle the port, that was Tiertex. Pretty sure a SMS port was part of Sega's deal with Capcom when they licensed Strider for the MD.

Back on topic: this is the other Famicom proto I'm dying to see dumped. As a long-time staff member at the Light Sword Cypher Mainframe, I've been wanting to see this made available for years. I can think of several other interested Strider fans that want to see it too.

If all goes well, this should be available in one form or another in a few months.

Auction has ended, highest bidder is buy*****. Don't know the rest of his username, either someone from NintendoAge or Lost Levels. Maybe Chris had a few more yen in his vault and he didn't tell me.

Congrats on picking that off, at least it went to a good home that appears to be one with good intentions. After learning about that one dick in Japan (Monster Party proto thread) who buys stuff like that to just lock it up to let it die alone it's nice to see things escape such clutches.

The last thing I want to do is keep this on the shelf forever. I've got something special in the works, assuming it gets to me without any hassle.

I noticed something about the images in the auction... In the Famicom Commercial the title screen has a shorter icon (tiny sword?) for selection while the one Arasoi bought has the final US icon, which depicts a kantana, or a machine gun, something like that. This is probably a production cart that was supposed to go in stores at willing date of release, because the one in the advertisement could be an EEPROM prototype, considering that Strider was supposed to be released 26 years ago and the cart in action does not experience bit rot, as seen in the images.

Anyways, congratulations for getting the cart. You put a smile on my face, buddy. And everyone's too. If your Fami-dumper needs to specify a mapper type/name, here are the technical details about the retail release:

PRG ROM: 16 x 16KiB
CHR ROM: 0 x 8KiB
ROM CRC32: 0x02ee3706
ROM MD5: 0x12fce6abd0531a9f9a4c2bfbcca124fb
Mapper #: 1
Mapper name: MMC1
Mirroring: Vertical
Battery-backed: No
Trained: No

Hopefully the prototype you have will match the retail release's information.

EDIT: Did anybody see the konami stuff in the back? Either he was a representative of Konami (like the SS on the TMNT retail prototype), or he got his stuff from a friend who was a representative of Konami instead.
