Don't forget about the Control Deck with the SMB pack-in.

Er... The Super Set was a PAL-only release, if I recall correctly (note the SMB/Tetris/World Cup). Also, don't forget the top-loader (to fit your format, it'd be Control Deck (NES-101/top-loader), blue box, AC adapter ("NES-001 and NES-101"), RF switch ("(S)NES"), 1 dogbone controller) .

Added some picts and rearranged info. Can see by zapper color that boxes with the red stripe at the top came later.  I know there are tons more PAL systems and exclusives.  Not sure if I just made up the deluxe set with no photo on the front...

I'm pretty sure there's an action set with the non-red stripe box and the orange zapper...

Also, are there any systems that have the old style seal of quality?

Good call, found the Action Set with orange Zapper. I would guess there will also be Power/Deluxe sets with orange Zappers too.

It looks like the pict I have of the Deluxe Set has the gold circle seal of quality on the back left corner. The Super Set (PAL) also looks like it has circle logo.

Found the Power Set with orange Zapper, it also adds the seal of quality onto the box front. Looks like the switch from gray->orange on Action Set also added seal of quality.

It's possible the Deluxe Set was cancelled before the switch to orange guns?

Added a control deck set with SMB, I assume its USA. Would be nice to know when each set actually came out, and when the switch from gray to orange zappers was done.

Here's what I can figure out:

Control Deck - 1986 (1987 for the Player's Guide pack-in, 1991 for the red stripe version)
Top Loader - 1993
Action Set - 1988
Deluxe Set - 1985
Challenge Set - 1991
Power Set - 1988
Sports Set - 1991
Super Set - 1990

And as far as I can tell, the switch from gray to orange on the Zapper was around mid-1989, the same time Nintendo switched to the oval Seal of Quality.

Not sure if you are interested in something like this but I know me, Dain, probably others consider this a box variant... WAL MART exclusive set.  Here's a pic, include it or not, it's out there to be had.

So since ROB was removed at end of 87 to beginning of 88, there should be no Deluxe Set with orange Zapper (89).

1991 would also be likely for the red stripe Action Set.

Seems to be lots of sites disagreeing about the first 2 available sets. Some say Deluxe/Action and some say Deluxe/Control Deck(SMB).

Well when I was a kid and had to save forever to buy my own NES system I had two choices at KayBee the Deluxe set with ROB, which is what I got, or the Control Deck with SMB(I 99% sure it was SMB).

I can confirm that the Deluxe Set (w/ROB, Gyromite, and Duck Hunt) and the Control Deck (w/SMB) were the two available in the early NES days. How can I confirm this, if I was born in '85 a mere 2-3 weeks before the NES was released? I used to frequent the local Wal-Mart, and I can remember the Action Set just kinda popping up one day in there, it seems like it was the summer of '88.

I have a date of 11/88 for the release of the Action Set. When was the switch from orange to gray zapper? (oh, and anyone who thinks the Action Set was around anywhere NEAR launch is a total and complete noob )

My mantra, as worded by SamSpade on 06/12/12:
I don't resell to fund my collection, I don't treat this hobby like a second job, I don't care if my collection is worth ten bucks or ten thousand because I never plan on selling it. Seriously, what does the value have to do with anything if you never plan on selling? Speculation doesn't mean jack shit to me at this point, I just want to play my nes games...

The late 88 sounds right for first Action Set, replacing the Deluxe Set (ROB discontinued). Do you have a real source for that month? I tried looking up info in Game Over by Sheff but it doesn't really have release date info.

No, I'll have to do some digging to find any "real" sources, but here's what I've got recorded in my ancient personal NES info file for two of the other sets, if you're interested:

Power Set: 12/90 (stand-alone pad being in 08/88)
Sports Set: 12/90

If this is correct, then that means the gray zapper would've been produced up through 1990 since the original Power Set is gray without seal.

And finally, you're missing the pic for the Deluxe Set variant: there's the NY test release and the general release.  I'd post a pic myself, but I'm in the mountains for the long weekend... maybe someone else can throw up a pic for you.

Yay I am not insane, it does exist. So that is JUST the test market one, or merely an earlier version? Would there be a different test market Control Deck?

I'm not sure how this is gonna fit into your list, but there are also, clearly, 2 different NESes.  There is one with a smooth top, and one with a textured top.  I'm not sure if each were specific to certain packages, or when the switch over was.  Good luck figuring that one out!!

I'm not sure if you're also going for consoles from other regions (besides the Super Set), but here are pics of some that stand out:

Smurfs set w/cardboard cover (PAL-B French release):

http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/...

http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/...

Turtles set w/cardboard cover (I think this one was released in the Benelux + French reason in PAL-B and also in the UK as PAL-A, although someone else should verify the PAL-A release):

http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/...

Top-loader standalone (PAL-A Australian release):

http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/...

Top-loader w/3in1 (PAL-A Australian release):

http://s6.photobucket.com/albums/...

I'm also pretty sure that there is a PAL-A toaster release with Star Wars (either with graphics on the box, stickers, or a cardboard cover).

As for Action sets and such, it's going to be quite a task to figure out all the variants from all the different PAL regions. Here's one that's easy, though...Asian Version Action set w/orange zapper:

Yup I will eventually add other regions too, but that will be a far bigger list. Already have picts of ~25 different sets, with about 17 being Control Deck sets. I would expect at least that many Action Sets too. Keep the links coming and I will do a big update later!
