Hey All,

I have an unreleased, undumped NES game I am trying to dump, but none of the mappers on CopyNES work, despite the game running fine in CopyNES and other systems. Anyone have any ideas on my best course of action from here? Direct dump from the roms? That's well above my head, unfortunately, but I'm hopeful someone in the great community here can help me out so we can get this thing distrubited.

Thanks!

Trouble with a dump? Use laxatives!
Just kidding... In all seriousness, if it's a licensed game, I managed to dump a few of my games with my kazzo back when it still worked, so you could try that. You just need to know the size of the PRG and CHR and the mapper the game uses

So this is a Daou game, and it looks like it needs mapper daou 306, possibly (found in an old NA thread). How I get this mapper on to CopyNES is beyond me.

Hmmmm...

Does it have mask ROMs/eproms or globs?

Not sure if Daou 249 is the mapper name? Only ever seen Daou 306 pop up anywhere. I’m sure someone savvy can get this up and running, unfortunately as Snoop did not say, “he is not I and I am not him.”

the mapper part # indicates mapper 156. is that an option on your copynes setup? the korean famicom carts have been dumped so someone has code to do it.

worst case scenario you could desolder the eproms and dump them directly. i would exhaust other options before doing that though. too bad they're not socketed, that would make it very easy.

Awesome, that is it! Unfortunately, I don’t believe it’s on my setup, but there has to be a way to get it on, I would guess. I will keep digging for info to see how to make this happen.

Anyone here have it, by chance?

It's a little scary if you're new to it but I think the best course of action here, unless you find someone to write you a CopyNES plugin, is to desolder, dump and re-solder. Since the Taiwanese version is dumped and emulated I'm pretty sure all you'd have to do is combine them and use that same header and it would work in an emulator.

i looked into copynes plugins to see how those work. they are built as a 6502 program that runs out of nes internal memory if i understand correctly. I don't have any of the 156 carts for testing and i'm not proficient enough with 6502 asm to build a new plugin by winging it. maybe ask around nesdev. there is a guy on famicomworld with fully implemented metal force repros, which might work for testing.

alternately look into getting a kazzo. you probably still need a new mapper plugin but those seem to be much more straightforward. and you could probably get someone like INL to help since he sells kazzos.

I actually have a Kazzo, but have never used it. It's going to take some self-educating for me to figure out how it works. Fortunately, I have some generous friends willing to help out!

The kazzo is fairly easy to operate by itself (I'm not talking about writing new scripts). Assuming you've followed correctly the footsteps to install it with the associated drivers and software. (There's just one thing with the kazzo, one mustn't insert or remove a cartridge while the kazzo is connected to the computer).

DUMPED!

After all these years, this baby is finally preserved. Now to work on the best way to release...repro is possible, but might need some hacking to make it compatible with common mappers.

Here is some footage btw, it's kind of Shaq Fu hilariously bad:

To be fair, I haven't spent much time with it, I'm sure there are controls I'm missing.

Man, that music is terribad but the large sprites and sometimes superfluous animation are pretty cool.

you don't like the triangle wave as a lead? outside of Dragon Warrior it's pretty tough to listen to.

this thread should be subbed "two chips, one board"

Hey, I made that video, for those interested it documents basically all of the changes from the retail Korean game:

- English "FOR OUR HERO !!" ending
- English character abbreviations for names on victory/selection screen
- "Street Hero" title screen
- Player 1's health is infinite, for testing/reviewing purposes
- The attract mode fight from the title screen doesn't time out like it does on the retail cartridge, possibly a bug introduced with the infinite health fix
