A poster at the donkeykongforum examined the direct feed recording of Billy Mitchell's world record Donkey Kong play-sessions. He went frame-by-frame during the stage transitions and notices inconsistancies in the loading of the stage sprites that can only be explained if the game was being run on MAME as opposed to actual arcade pcb hardware.

All past records will be obliterated because much like how today's athletes are bigger, stronger, and faster than people from the '80s, the video game nerds that are competing today are far more prolific, organized, playing/training smarter, have better tools at their disposal, and are driven.

This old guard doesn't have a chance... which is going to directly clash with their egos. Anyone on the "national video game team" from the '80s has been eclipsed by thousands of young nerds nowadays. The only possible way they can put up relevant scores now is to cheat.

Oddly enough, I just watched King of Kong last night and it makes Twin Galaxies and Billy Mitchell look pretty bad. Also watched Man vs Snake and it takes a pretty similar tone.  
 

Never met the guy but he always came off as a douche in documentaries and such. Let's just wipe the board and do them all over again.

Yeah this is huge news. I know he was given a bad wrap in the King of Kong movie, and is supposedly a nice guy in real life. But this very clear evidence makes him a total cheat and his career should be over. If you are inviting him and paying him to be at your convention you are supporting a lying cheat.

I read the whole dispute thread on tg, current to this morning. One of the (former?) refs/officials mentioned one of his DK submissions had an issue with the video with the score around the million mark, and 2 or 3 of the officials watching immediately agreed it invalidated the video, but walter day approved it indepentenly afterward. I think they may have rescinded it when they found out, I kinda glossed over that.

Still decently high considering how many fresh Donkey Kong players that movie must have generated, and the raw dedication that people who stream video games for a living bring to the table.
