I was going to post with a map of the level I found online last night because I was pondering this same thing. How does one determine how far you are?  And you answered it quite easily in this case!

It may be possible if someone runs through the game again to 8-1 and looks for very specific cues, such as two rocks at once with one little one in the background, and for Kitty with the Professor, versus without. That said, I believe at least the latter of those repeats as well, so... ]]>

I can tell you I died to the very first enemy in 8-1. Also my score was the worst of the three anyway!   Ha!  It is furthest progression first and foremost so that's why I just wanted some verification since leaderboard points were associated with this.  I know this isn't going to affect your overall placement.
