And in PS4 you learn there wasn't another mother brain made, so sounds like rolf won. Course, since we never got Phantasy Star Official Production Compendium like Japan did, we didn't know this for a fact for years and years. ]]>

The game had started to get old around the time you have to go to the four Dam dungeons, mainly because of the repetitive nature of the background and enemy types, as well as the high encounter rate and strength of the enemies. One thing I felt like the game kinda lacked was boss battles - in most JRPGs these are kinda where you get to show off all of your cool abilities, but this game only has two of them! (The "Army Eye" battle doesn't count since you can't win it.)

But anyway, the game picked back up for me on Dezoris, I actually quite enjoyed the Nei-item dungeons, the run-down villages, and the spooky abandoned spaceport with the stray cats and newspaper clippings.

I arrived at Dark Force with Rolf, Rudo, Anna, and Amy all at about level 26-27 and was soundly thrashed. I warped back to one of the Nei dungeons and did some grinding - I didn't really want to go all the way to level 35 (when Rolf learns the Megidd technique) since that sounded awful, so I decided to hit 30 and then see how I did.

For the second round I did much better. By level 29 Amy had learned GiSar which really helped, and I rearranged my party and equipment a bit for more effective battle. I managed to kill Dark Force but lost Anna and Amy, so I had to warp back to town to clone them before proceeding to the final-final boss.

Mother Brain wasn't nearly as difficult as Dark Force. I was able to manage her attack-all effects pretty easily with GiSar and Anna/Amy using Trimates as needed. I beat her with all party members intact.

The ending was a surprise for me! I guess I won't spoil it but it didn't feel like the ending of any other JRPG I've played.

So next is either finishing Shining in the Darkness or starting Phantasy Star III. ]]>

Hahaha, I actually thought about how hypocritical that looked after I posted it! But Slade is my boy. Probably my favorite character of the first two.

I'm a huge fan of Domingo, Hanzou, and Arthur from the first.

As the years have gone on I've also grown to love the Centuar/Rangers from the first two (Lyle and May).

I really love the design and charm of Kiwi from SFII but since his HP stays so low he's pretty much useless.

Also last random thought: Max >>>> Bowie

I'm enjoying the upgraded Wolf Baron, but I'm extremely disappointed with how much of a pussy the first dragon you get turns out to be.

What a wimp.

My main strategy has been to keep (1) all of my healers in the part, (2) all of my fliers and move-advantaged people in the party, (3) my two original magic users

I've gradually bumped my archers, knights (except for arthur), and warriors out of the party as it's back-filled with other characters.

Haven't bothered with Domingo, yet.  Don't know who I'd drop to bring him in, though.

Oh yeah, Zylo is a total boss!

Bleu is actually really good, but he requires a lot of work and sometimes I don't feel like putting the work in, haha.

Adam is another character who is weak as shit, but if you work at him he gets pretty good. My last playthrough I grinded like crazy towards the end of the game to get him good. Kind of a waste of time, but whatever.

Domingo ends up being sweet and doesn't take much to get him leveled up. His defense becomes beastly, has good movement, and learns the Freeze spells.

Don't forget Musashi! He's one of the hidden characters, and you don't get him until towards the end of the game, but he is a complete stud. Same with Hanzou, though he's actually quite difficult to find. The ninjas are amazin'!

That's when I'm not swapping characters to keep my force at equal levels anyway. ]]>

Shining Force 1 and 2 are my personal favorites. I've been playing through Shining Force 1 and it starts out feeling fun, but I'm losing steam because it's so easy to win (compared to other tactical RPGs like FF Tactics).

I'll probably get around to finishing it.  Then I'll give Shining in the Darkness a try (I love Arcana and other RPGs in that style... Wizardry, Might and Magic, etc)
