Does the cic pin4 mod really require cutting? The videos I've just pull it out. Can it be plugged back in?
Lifting the pin (examples:
#1 #2 #3) and cutting the pin are effectively/functionally the same thing.
The reason people cut it (rather than lift it) is for simplicity; it's a lot easier to just cut the pin with some wire snips when it's already soldered into place (
example). Otherwise you have to desolder the entire chip (all the pins), remove it, lift the pin, then reinsert/resolder the chip in place.
What about those guys who use a screwdriver to pop the leg out of the die of that chip on the motherboard. Does that potentially damage the chip? I saw someone use a safety pin.
I don't do electronics, don't want to buy snips. But if cutting it is the only way to later ground it, I might.
Couldn't you just cut the trace leading to that pin instead of doing something to the pin itself? To me that sounds cleaner/simpler, and you can do it with any kind of knife.
@tokumaru: Yep could do that too!
Put because the pin is connected to the power, it's not a trace but a power plane, which is most complex to cut.

Keep in mind, you don't have to ground it. It has an internal pull down. Just need to cut it.
That's great, Jeroen, if it's true I don't have to worry about grounding it.
I have some pretty annoying NESes I want to clean and disable their 10nes chip. The video I watched said it was better to ground it in case of an arc causing grey dots on screen.
That's why I was wondering if the hooked pin top could be put back in, just in case.
I guess not. They must be just ripping it out of there
