Hey dudes!!
Today I went to a flea-market and bought a nes-cart with no label.
I can't get it working and dumped the rom to my PC but still can't get it working.
See my page for details.
Could you guys take a look at it and try to get it working?
here's my page:
http://clix.to/jeroen-online
Well, that's interesting...it appears to be a Palutena no Kagami (Kid Icarus) FDS pirate, attached to an official 72-pin adapter. There's FDS BIOS code and graphics at the beginning of the ROM.
As for getting it to work, I'm not sure. Maybe it uses the same mapper as other FDS pirates?
well, maybe you guys can take a look at it.
It would be cool to get it working cause (if possible) it will be cool to dump that back to a cart.
How did you dump the ROM? I see 2 glop top chips on that board. Is one of them just a ROM? I'm curious mainly because your "Dump.bin" is an odd size.
By the way, Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa uses mapper 42. So does Ai Senshi Nicol. Both FDS to cart hacks. Maybe this one uses it too. I tried to attach such a iNES header to it and see if it would run but it didn't seem to do anything. I also see no battery, so I doubt this conversion supports saving. Or if it does maybe it uses some kind of eeprom or something.
I dumped it by looking up pinouts.
soldering the ends of the converter to pins of an eeprom socket and from there on dump it.
it seem to have worked (dumped)
This isn't a timewasting "hoax" is it? The cart looks like it was dipped into paint by the bubbles. I don't think this is a pirate game, with the official adapter and official looking NROM epoxy board. If you really dumped this with a programmer, why isn't the file size 2^n? You dumped both PRG and CHR? How did you dump >32KiB/>8KiB of ROM without bankswitching? Even if you overdumped ROMs and added on a header it doesn't add up to your file size.
dipped into paint?
what do you mean?
The first 8K is the FDS BIOS. This is very unusual. The other two FDS hacks I've seen have the FDS BIOS at the end of the ROM. Also, starting around $4010 is basically an FDS Disk file. It's different than a *.FDS file we have now though as it has two extra 00s for the CRC, though no gaps.
You should really try to get the cartridge to work on real hardware though. It's strange that it wouldn't work at all. Maybe you need to clean the contacts on the cartridge and use a NES system with a good connector.
Anyway, this dump you have consists of a slightly modified FDS BIOS, followed by the slightly different dump of Kid Icarus for FDS. There are few enough changes to the BIOS that it shouldn't be too hard to figure out what is going on.
It looks like someone literally painted the plastic by the loss of texture and the bubbles on the surface, not to mention the normal grey color on the inside...
hmm well I didn't....I can guarantee you that.
I just want this game to work so I didn't waste my 50 eurocents.
btw about my NES.....just replaced the connector.
The contacts of the cart can;t be cleaner .
The FDS Bios has a few minor changes like skipping Disk SET checks (or making sure they always pass) and Drive Ready Checks. Also there looked to be some small controller related change. But other than those 3 or so changes, the BIOS is the same. So the mapper in that cartridge is doing alot of the job of reproducing the operation of the FDS. I think it's not a mapper in the iNES collection yet.
With minimal changes to the BIOS the software operation of the game is much the same assuming it works at all. So this mapper probably has 32K of RAM at $6000 to $DFFF, the first 8k of the ROM dump you have goes at $E000 to $FFFF. It has 8K of CHR-RAM. And all the registers work similar to the FDS. You could probably emulate this thing, but you won't likely be reproducing it.
If you can, you should try dumping the PRG again to be sure you have the contents of the chip correct.
Edit: In addition to the CRCs being present for each block, there are 22 Bytes (0x16 bytes) of zeroes between Side A and Side B in the FDS file that are not present in the Dump.bin file.
sorry, don't have much knowledge when it comes to this.
I finished checking the FDS inside the Dump.bin against the "alternate" *.FDS file known as Hikari Shinwa - Palutena no Kagami (1986)(Nintendo)[a].fds
They match exactly other than the differences I detailed which were that the pirate cartridge has the CRC16 bytes in it (though they are zeroed) and the pirate cartridge cuts off trailing zeroes that are at the end of the disk image.
One reason the alternate image may be used is because if the pirate doesn't support saving, it already has a new file registered and the other dump does not. However they are registered with the exact same name which is strange.
My point is though that there is absolutely no differences in the game. It's just supposed to be a pirate cartridge to play FDS games which is nifty if you could change the FDS image on it. Good luck with getting it working.
Hahahahaha. Nice scam, you f*cking
idiot.
(I apologize for the large images, but it's necessary to show these side-by-side)

Obviously, all he did was cover up the original watermark and board ID. I thought those weird white marks near the connector looked fishy; kyuusaku's observations just pushed me to investigate further.
Sorry, kid, you lose. What did you hope to gain from this stupid little stunt? Was it an elaborate plot to get someone to "fix" Palutena no Kagami to run on a cart for you? If so, you could've just asked, and not made a complete fool of yourself. Either that, or played a little old NES game called "Kid Icarus." I hear Nintendo did a pretty good job converting it!
What I want to know is what the heck is up with the brown paint job?
Perhaps someone did a poor job of removing whatever previous label was on the cart, and dipping it in brown paint was the (hoaxer's) solution to covering up label remnants?
listen up. this isn't a scam.
If you want, I'll take some other pictures!!
Either way. I think I'm gonna throw away the cart and keep the converter.
I got a converter for dirt cheap!! ( only €0,50!!!)
[EDIT]
I took a quickshot with my (old) mobile phone.
It's a small picte (only 165x165)
*IMAGE REMOVED*
There it is laying on my floor!!
well dudes, eveyone thinks this is a scam so I just decided to take the page I made offline and remove the image in the above post.
I'll throw away the board, keep the converter and never talk about this again.
Man, you sure whine a lot. You got found out, deal with it.
Nice attempt at destroying the evidence.
Too bad I made a backup.
Sorry we're not the idiots you're looking for. You might have better luck with
these guys, though.
Already I found the timing strange when all of a sudden, someone found a pirate cart of that game "just" after someone else started to ask how to convert the fds version of it.
The coincidence of those events is what give it out for me.

I just ran a checkuser, and it appears Dutch-Win and downloader more than likely live together.

No, that's a damned good sign they
are the same person. -_-

By golly. How'd I miss that?BMF54123 wrote:

Well, looks like I was mostly right...he managed to both ask AND make a fool of himself.
uhm dudes to be honest the story is.
My roommate (downloader) has fooled around with this rom he couldn't get to work.
I know little Commodor 64 ASM and since it's both 6502 (nes & c64)he thought I could make this work.
But the guy didn;t knew what he was doing and this rom was so not understandable, I just had to see what you guys could do with it.
and I made up the story about the cart to make it look cooler.
But still, would you like to check it out?
btw. I think I can erase the BIOS from there.....
What? What you said didn't make much sense.
If you want Kid Icarus, are you just wanting a japanese version on a cartridge, or are you just wanting save capability on a cartridge?
If you want to save, you could hack the US Kid Icarus ROM. You could probably fairly easily hack together a single save system, probably not too much harder to make a multi save system out of it. You just need to know 6502 ASM, download a NES tech document and grab FCEUXD. That's all you really need to do that. Assuming you do know what you are doing.
Furthermore on the subject, why would you want to save on Kid Icarus so badly when there is a password system? And finally, people here generally do not do work on request.
Well I would like a save system on Kid Icarus.
3 saves would be nice (just like the FDS).
I know there is a hacked translated rom on the net which shows the Jap TitleScreen and jap characters, but it stil has the password system and I want the save system like the FDS has got.
I know people don't work by request, but this is something I really really really want.
Well, the thing to do would be to find the subroutines for "Continue" or rather the Password Entering screen, as well as the screen where you get your password or whenever else you'd want to be able to save. Then you also need to find out if there is any unused RAM between $6000 - $7FFF that you can use. It'll be a problem if you can't find any. But after you find all that you should be able to save status into some free RAM space and restore it as you wish. I mean it isn't ubber noob easy, but I don't really think it is that hard either.
So you might want to check out
www.romhacking.net for ASM hacking info. If this sort of thing is beyond you, you'll have to look around for someone else to do this project which will likely be just as hard.
Also, have you considered buying a FDS system? That would seem to me to be the ideal thing to do. They don't really cost all that much money if you really are into it.
What's with this site and hoaxers/liars?
Dutch-Win, downloader: do you also live with

An occasional fraud is worth the entertainment once in a while. This one is great, gave me a good laugh.

I totally disagree. A hoax only makes people waste time that could otherwise be used for something actually productive.
There are plenty other ways to have fun, authentic fun, where no one is being fooled. I much prefer random stupid posts in General Discussion than dealing with things like this post.
The fact of the matter is, he tried to trick people in order to get what he wanted--something that already exists in a very playable form, even--and then flat-out denied accusations and destroyed the evidence when he was found out. That kind of sh!t is inexcusable in my book.
NO MORE HOAXES.
If I see another hoax from these two within a few months, B&.

"Band" and "banned" are homophones in standard American English, both pronounced [bænd] in IPA.
Another October fun fact: "Hocus pocus" and "hoax" [hoʊks] both derive from Latin
hoc est corpus, meaning "here is the body".
