Hey all. It's finally the time!
I made a video that explains it in detail:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IsnZ8kftm_U
But in a nutshell:
-February 22nd is the day
-$27 for the first 100 carts
-$30 for all subsequent
-$3 off on my first two carts
It's great that this has nearly come to an end.
Woo-hoo! Congratulations, Sivak! I'm looking forward to playing it.
Ordered! Can't wait to get it!
Ordered. This is fantastic. I really hope this community produces more titles of similar quality eventually!
Ordered, and as a present for myself. It's nice to get news like this on my birthday!
- I'm afraid of having to pay around 60% for import taxes!
Hey all. Thanks for support. I'm guessing a new batch will be up on March 1st, next Monday. So check back then if you missed it.
Congratulations dude!
It's a huge source of inspiration watching your stuff. I'd love to read some "behind the scenes" on how it was created..

Is such a tariff supposed to encourage semiconductor companies to establish a
fab in Brazil?

- I have absolutely no clue about that. I never bought anything out of here, by internet ways I mean... -_-;;
Next batch is actually going to be tomorrow, Wednesday, the 24th. Just thought I'd mention it!
Congratulation on releasing your game.
It will be interesting to see how much the game sale. I hope you will be able to share those numbers. If it does well then it would prove that there is still a market for those platform if the game is good enough (and the price is right). Can't wait to see.
I'm flabbergasted at how the trailer has 245K hits when his other videos all have a few hundred to a thousand. Other forums must have given it lots of exposure, or was it something else?
Looking forward to the game. I want to see what's on the other side of those numeral blocks!

More numeral blocks! And other stuff...
Woohoo! Got my copy in this morning. Looks great! Very professional. Need to get my NES out of it's box (moving this weekend so it's packed up) and try this baby out!
Can't believe I just got a brand new NES game...

Make sure the title screen says "Version 1.000" and not "Version Proto", otherwise you have an unfinished version of the game. It can be sent back and replaced 100% free though.
Mine is "Version Proto" (C) 2009
Compiled: 11/02/2009.
Why are some people receiving unfinished versions?
It was just a mistake in the production, wrong file/chip used for PRG.
This NA thread has the differences which are insignificant to gameplay.
If anyone does get this version, just mail it back to the address in the
www.retrousb.com FAQ. Include a note inside the box with order details so your postage can be refunded. Additionally collectors are interested in the proto version so you may be able to make a profit selling it to them.
Are all the first 100 copies prototype versions?
Dwedit wrote:

Dwedit wrote:

According to the NA thread mentioned below, no.
Dwedit wrote:

No. I don't know the count, but it seems like it'll be less than 50, maybe less than 30.
I'd recommend doing the swap for the proper, finished version.
I'm going to probably make a video announcement for some of the potential buyers I know on youtube.
Mine is version 1.000. No ultra-rare prototype for me
Awesome game so far. Even more polished than the demo, which was great. HARD though! Anybody got any game genie codes?
Need a rom dump to make game genie codes, unless you like doing things the oldschool way, entering random stuff into the Game Genie screen.
Found a minor bug in Version Proto. Hold B after the intro, and a shot fires from an invisible player as the ship descends. Was this fixed in the final version?
Warning: The following sarcastic comments (i.e. joke) may not be appropriate for people with no sense of humor.
If I would be listening to the conspiracy theorist, they would tell me that the proto miss was staged all a long to make some extra buzz in the collector circles.
Nahhh... I have too much imagination, don't I?
- Uh, so... yeah. I believe so. ^_^;;

I just looked. Nope. Oh well. It doesn't break the game.
Here's a game genie code for the DEMO version:
PPKTXXYP
Invincibility, Select becomes suicide button.
Don't bother testing it on anything other than the demo version.
Got it today. Version 1.000. Which is good because I didn't want the dilemma of keeping or exchanging it. I'll wait until finishing it before writing what I think.
Version 1.000 arrived today. Incredibly frustrating, but fun. It will probably take me a long time to beat.
Thanks, Sivak!

Thanks, Sivak!
- As I said before, it shouldn't be MegaMan Zero 1-likes of "one hit kills". An energy bar with refills would improve the replay value. Heh, don't take this as the "easy mode" in MM10. ^_^;;

Thanks, Sivak!
Ditto. I've taken to playing on easy mode, mainly because most of the difficulty (for me, so far, anyway) seems to be navigational hazards rather than enemies that *need* to be eliminated (like the room before getting the jump height enhancement).
... Or it could just be my general lack of coordination
The second boss is far easier than the first boss. But I can't beat Cleo! She's so hard.
Fun fact, you can take bits and pieces from one password and glue them onto another password. This means you can change an Easy Mode password into a Normal Mode password and vice versa, or even get the Damage Boost item without being pink. The password system for this game is about as secure as Megaman 3's.
For instance, I got this password: FEGBDJYM
And I have another Easy Mode password: EEGWNJTU
You can make a derived password: EEGBNJYM which is equivalent to the first password, but you are on easy mode and have the damage boost.
When I played Mega Man 2 as a kid I couldn't even beat Flash Man let alone survive his stage most of the time. That didn't make the game less fun, however.
I played it over and over again just to enjoy the levels and game play and my imagination went crazy on what could possibly lie beyond the laser beams in Quick Man's Stage that were so difficult to overcome.
That said, I'm glad BK is as hard as it is. Can't wait to play it. Still waiting for my copy to arrive.
I can't wait to play this game! I've been waiting forever. I wish I had it in my hands right now.
I haven't ordered it yet because I want to bundle it with a PowerPak and my current Paypal balance is a tad short of covering the cost of both. Hope to get that fixed soon.
So which game is harder, Battle Kid, or Bunny Must Die?
EDIT: FINALLY BEAT CLEO!
So here's a self-important review. This will be spoiler free for the most part, I'll let you know when a spoiler comes up. It's an instant classic, probably on par with "second-tier" classics like Contra and Castlevania I in terms of player involvement, challenge and masochism. The format makes each new room interesting to look at, to see the layout and what hazards it contains.
The good thing about one hit death is no grinding. It's just you and the hazards with no lucky save. Now that I've beaten it I'll probably go through it every so often.
Now come the spoilers
...
It was cool how the final stage was a greatest hits package of all the hazards. Even if losing the player his inventory was a dick move, it's made up for in the order you get it back, forcing the player to try new techniques since you've never had double jump without the feather before.
I was a little disappointed at how getting the 4th key only gets you an extended ending. Was hoping for another boss or something.
Also, as expected, the disappearing spikes were my least favorite part, for the same reason I don't like paddle games: it forces the player into arbitrary downtime. At least with disappearing blocks you're razor focused on the next move. But you only put them in like 7 or 8 rooms so it's not a big deal.
The bosses were knuckle dusters, especially Cleo, Amethyst Angel and Zedd. First you die in two seconds, then you last a little longer, then you win. Fighting them and the final boss is almost like a meditation exercise (I got lucky with Cleo since it didn't use that falling star attack).
Well, at least you beat it!

That's too bad, I was hoping it'd be more like Metroid's which has been
fully disassembled/explained and is an ingenious little system.
Do you have a demo version to try? When do you plan on doing the next run of cartridges?

You can find the Battle Kid demo

I thought it'd be nice if the music was muted when you pause. Or at least decrease the volume a bit. When I was playing, my phone rang. I paused to make sure I actually heard it, but...the music kept going at full volume.
Only if someone can find something that breaks the game. Volume mods wouldn't be easy with the music engine nor would pausing and resuming a song. It'd have to start over from the beginning. Just mute your TV if you need to.
Most NES games appear to just cut all notes and not clock the music sequence.
Beat the game... Man is my heart pounding and my body shaking with adrenaline.
Didn't manage to find Damage Amp though, but at least I had key #4.

So you liked it?
I bet if you beat it on "unfair" it displays a secret code you can hand to Sivak and he'll take your requests for the sequel.
Then again maaaaaybe not.
In any situation when something get scarce, there is always some ass that will try to make a buck out of it. Same thing when the wii came out or PS3 in the state. I'm not surprised at all since it's on Ebay.
The worst thing is the game will be in stock soon so it's not like it won't be available for years or out of print.. I don't approve that way of doing things but I guess there's nothing we can do. That's not supporting the author at all. If I had the adapter to play it on my famicom or a US nes, I would surely buy it once it come back in stock but NEVER on ebay. It's not a game that sold millions like a professional one that is now rare or something.
(reposted message in right thread, for some reason it was moved. phb issue?)
Am I the only one who doesn't think that's evil/croocked?
He spotted an opportunity and jumped on it. If he doubles his money, good for him.
It's not like Battlekid will sell any fewer copies because people will buy from this guy instead. All the copies this guy (and guys like him) can sell must've been bought legit.
Maybe after this auction ends (or even before it ends) people will google the game to find out what's up with it and they'll come across the official page. If anything it's like free promotion.
Now if they start copying the carts and selling them... that's another story. But that doesn't seem to be the case here, so I don't see what the problem is.
The case of Battle kid is maybe of smaller scale and we only saw one so it's not like it's the end of the world but the message was more that it's a form of scalping if more ends up on ebay because of the current unavailability of the product. I just don't support scalpers in general. It's my opinion and other people don't have to agree with it.
I remember for the PS3 in Japan, some "business man" (...) were paying beggars to wait in line so they could get a PS3 and resell it after. That's not ok.
Another way of seeing it is if all games ends up on ebay because people are not aware of retrozone and pay up double or more of the price, this is less money that retrozone and the author receive. This money could have been used by them to produce new products. It's not like retrozone is a large company and have a publicity budget or something.
For now it's only 1 case, no big fuzz. Just hope it doesn't become a trend.

I guess yeah, scalping is bad for the people who want the product. But it's not necessarily bad for the person selling the product.

I don't see how that applies.
Retrozone sells to scalper who sells to Joe Gamer
The end result: Retrozone sells a copy and makes a profit, scalper does a little legwork and redistribution and makes a profit, Joe Gamer pays too much for the game.
Sucks for Joe Gamer, but Retrozone isn't hurt by it at all. They sell just as many copies as they would if Joe Gamer bought from them direct. Possibly even more since there's no guarantee that the scalper will be able to flip the product.

I don't see what's wrong with that. It's an investment.
I guess we both have different opinion on the subject (nothing wrong with that) so there is no point for me to add more to it

Well, I never said it was evil. I'm just shocked that it's selling for so much! They're due to go back for sale March 12th. I was thinking maybe they're updating the version of the carts or something, hence the high demand...I don't know.
EDIT: I suspected this because of that
huge easily exploitable glitch.
What glitch is this? Sounds interesting.
I guess he means the thing about the password which is not a glitch.
I'm hearing about an invincibility glitch, but know absolutely nothing about it.
Then there's also secret passwords for debug mode and a secret level. IAMHAX0R and PETUNIAX
I also notice that you get stuck in walls for a frame, but I'm not sure if you can wallkick, since that requires frame-precise timing (TAS).
And thanks to the debug mode password, I found the illusion wall.
Edit: Figured out the invincibility glitch.
Oh, didn't hear about those. Then my guess must be wrong. Didn't play the game yet so I can only guess.
Yeah, I meant the invincibility glitch. Now I'm intrigued about the passwords...
Disch wrote:

It's good for the buyer as well if it's available in limited quantities and underpriced. A scalper ensures that those who
really want it will get it. It's like so-called price gougers when there's a shortage of e.g. water or gasoline. If they didn't jack up the price, the first few people to come through would empty them out.
What's the criticism others have though? A scalper pays for it like anyone else. Once he does so, it's his. Then he is free to charge whatever he wants, and potential buyers are free to decline paying what he's charging. If nobody bought his stuff, he'd have to lower his prices or find a new line of work. So you might as well blame those that buy from a scalper as well, since they are essential to his operation.
It's all a question of whether you think authors or copyright owners should be able to tax resale.
Yippee, after two weeks and some trouble with customs (didn't have to pay anything, they just confiscated the packet "because no bill was attached to it") I finally hold BK in my hands. It's a proto version, too.
It's a lot of fun, but damn, do I suck at it.
This game was totally not made for my shaky hands and lack of sense for timing.
