Turning off trackpad clicks? (Windows 10)
by on (#173953)
Is there any way how to do this? It drives me insane. I'll be moving the cursor, and for whatever reason, it'll think I put my finger off the trackpad and put it back on in a split second, causing me to click whatever I was currently over. I looked at the trackpad configuration thing, but the only time it looked like you could disable clicking is while you're typing. I don't get it, if I want to click something, I'll use the buttons below it.

It varies from driver to driver, but you can eliminate taps or change tap sensitivity on most drivers.
Unless you ended up with a trackpad where the driver the manufacturer puts on is the wrong driver and can't even talk to the hardware. (FUCK YOU DELL)

It truly is infuriating. I was overly optimistic when I thought maybe there would be a key combo to turn the trackpad off (ha). I was able to turn the sensitivity down and that made it a little better, but there is no way to completely disable the tap to click abomination. I got a cheap Dell laptop to use for coding, and I'm one who never wants to touch the mouse for any reason when I'm coding. So finding my cursor jumping to some random place, highlighting and deleting text when I type, is just ridiculous. So far I've been able to ctrl+z my way out of the worst of the screwups, but it just seems like a pointless battle. If there's hope for some kind of alternate driver, that would be nice.

Windows does let you disable the touchpad automatically for at least a second after any keypress.

So does Linux (through syndaemon if I remember correctly), but that makes it hard to, for example, Shift+click because not only keys that insert a character but also modifier keys reset the 1-second timer.

What's the make and model of the laptop? What does the touchpad show up as in the device manager?
