Starting a rom hacking site on StackExchange
by on (#174770)
Hey! Sometime ago I've got a question about hacking Mega Man 2 and posted in a lot of places, including here IIRC. I got some useful replies, but my question got quickly buried on the forums. Then I went to StackExchange (the network that includes StackOverflow) but could not find the best place of a question like this. There is not even a "rom-hacking" tag on any of SE sites I checked (like StackOverflow itself and GameDevelopment). Now it occurred to me that a new specialized site about rom hacking on SE may be a good idea. I just created its proposal and it is on the first phase, namely, recruit followers. If you think this may be worth a try, log into Area 51 and follow the proposal. Otherwise, no problem, the idea here is precisely to know if there is demand for this kind of site :).

Why does this type of thing need to be on Stackoverflow or Stackexchange? For decades we've had separate sites/boards dedicated to romhacking -- The Whirlpool a.k.a. donut used to be the main go-to until they mostly closed down, and all of that discussion now takes place over on http://www.romhacking.net. So why does SO or SE have to be involved? I'm just not seeing why that's a pre-requisite.

Did you ask your MM2 romhacking question on romhacking.net's forum? If not, why not? If so, what happened?

Yes, I asked, and no, I've got no answers. Anyway, you may be totally right. Or not. That's what the proposal is for. Also, it is not a pre-requisite to be on SE, it is just an alternative that some people may like. If not, the proposal will be closed and life goes on. Thanks anyway, your opinion is indeed relevant.

There's already a Stack Exchange site about reverse engineering. If everything related to ROM hacking is on-topic at RESE, it'll probably get closed.
