- The Wii backward compatibility includes GameCube. Is this supported by emulation or by hardware, like the GBA in the DS?
IIRC it's hardware, but not entirely sure.
I've read they're both PowerPC based and that both GPUs came from ATI so its probably hardware.
I'm 100% sure it's hardware, the Wii itself is an "upgraded" GC in about all aspects.
Hardware, even down to the clock speed.
the CPU and GPU are compatable with them underclocked in gamecube mode with the RAM cutdown to gamecube level as well
So, Gamecube games don't take any advantage of the Wii system?

No, just as GBC games run in a GBA don't take advantage of the GBA hardware, and GBA games run in a DS don't take advantage of the DS hardware.
Progressive scan mode & lower power consumption, but that's just about it.
also being able to read full sized 4.7gb DVD's fully in gamecube mode witch not usefull in a stock Wii
