Imagine a video game where only half the ROM is filled with game play. The other half is entirely composed of
false ending cutscenes showing the ramifications of the player character's death, depending on where and how the character died. There are no extra lives. There are no continues. However, the player can start at any "episode".
Has this been done?
Out of this World (a.k.a. Another World) had a few different death sequences. i only played halfway through the snes port, so im'm not sure how many different death scenes there are.
i can't get the url tag to work...

phpBB doesn't treat ( and ) as valid URL characters, despite the fact that most web browsers accept them. Try right-clicking "article" at the top and choosing Copy Link Location, which will translate ( to %28 and ) to %29.
This pretty much reminds me Fire Emblem, exept that you don't get a false ending, but just a death quote on the death of a character. You still have only one life, no continues, etc... (exept that you can sometimes continue the game if you wish even if not all characters are alive).
Live a Live (SNES) also had a lot of False endings, each featuring "false credits".
The only thing worse would be a game where once enough characters on the cartridge get killed off, the player has to pay to revive characters. Someone seems to
think that Hideo Kojima has suggested this mechanic in interviews; I just find it too arcade-like for a console environment.
Sweet Home had it so that each of your party members had a special skill. deaths were permanent, but you could find items to substitute for the skill. i generally screwed myself too early on to get the "good" ending.
Another World is probably the most crazy SNES game cinematic wise (although the graphics should and could have been better) with insane ways of dying like disintegrating by a weird race of people or getting eaten by a black bear-like person, poisoned with instant death and even if I remember, just touching one weird species you skin breaks into goo. That is just horrible beyond anything I can imagine.

Is this an oblique reference to Bubsy?
(Of course, in Bubsy, only 10% of the game ROM is filled with game play...)
Game Over. FlashROM erase sequence begun. Do not press power or reset buttons (ha!).
That'd be a little too much, heheh.
I like the false ending cutscene idea though.
