Anybody notice an erie resemblence between the characters in these 2 games? The use of black cartoon outlines. The sideways facing characters. The pastel colored backgrounds. Marco even does Mario's iconic "jump for joy."
No, not at all. What is your point? Metal Slug is a highly animated and great looking game.
Nowhere close, they may look sorta the same because of light colors, but Metal Slug has so much more detail, and the characters look the same outide of the black outline, which is a common thing anyway.
Sorry for the misleading thread title.
This is more "General" than "Other Retro Dev" also.
I have no idea what "SMAA SMB" is, and google isn't helping much. Can someone please de-acronymize that for me?
Super Mario Allstars SMB3 is what he is talking about.
Very weird thread..
Who else but Nintendo would design SMB3?
Metal Slug was designed by Nazca, former Irem employees.
If you like Metal Slug's art then play:
Air Duel
Armed Police Unit Gallop
Undercover Cops
In the Hunt
(Last Resort)
GunForce and Geostorm are basically Metal Slug prototypes with good art, bad gameplay in my opinion.
related to the spirit of the topic, this is an interview that includes one of the primary graphics designers of the SNES remake.

of note (obvious at the time):
Sugiyama:
Right. In the collection, Super Mario and The Lost Levels, in particular, were different from their originals. We fashioned the characters somewhat after those in Super Mario World for the Super Famicom.
Mori:
Yes, that’s right. So we even put a black outline around Mario.
Mario's sprites in SMB1 and SMB2J for All-Stars looked more like the SMB3 sprites to me, not the SMW/Mario Is Missing sprites.
yeah. I agree in that instance.
But it was more about really trying to use all 15 colors and use black outlines so objects would stand out from the backgrounds.
Mario Bros 2 really stands out as having a facelift. Dare I swear to say they had a lot of fun redoing graphics for that (kinda annoying) game.
Games with black outlines also tend to look better on composite and RF than games without a black outline.
