So I just got me a neat little Play Computer Zero plus a few multicarts to have something to play at my vacation house. It also comes with a 9-in-1 internal ROM, though the games are mostly rubbish. Tests with a Rockman 6-in-1 and some genuine Rockman carts have gone good so far, so the console itself seems to work.
Console PCB front,
Console PCB backThen I tested a 68-in-1 multicart, which the seller has guaranteed to be functional. But all I get is a garbled screen, with no functionality:
68 cart,
68 PCB front,
68 PCB backAt the moment I don't know if the console just doesn't like the 68 cart, or if the cart is really busted (I already tried cleaning the contacts). Tomorrow I will try to see if it works on a genuine Famicom.
In the meantime, does anybody have some advice if this issue is fixable?
Crap clone+Crap designed pirate=Crap no play results. Get a real system, or live with it not being functional as clones are a joke.
Fixable?
I would not expect much from glob top carts.
Oh I know it's a crap system. But before I throw the cart in the trash, I was curious if rewiring the pins could bring better results.
But thanks anyway.
Did you ever get around to testing it on the Famicom?

Yep, I just did. It works fine on a real Famicom (of course the cart only contains a repeated list of SMB, Tennis, Excitebike, Macross, Dr. Mario and a Columns clone).
I also tested a few more original carts on the clone (SMB2, SMB3, Yoshi's Cookie), which all work fine as well. So it's just the combination of clone console with clone cart that doesn't work.
Here's a test: The PowerPak works through an adapter on the Famicom but doesn't work on many clones. Do you have a PowerPak?

I do have a Powerpak+adapter (and also Akumajou Densetsu if that helps), but I'll have to get them first. I will post my results tomorrow night.
Weird... If there's one type of console pirate carts are supposed to run on... it's clones! OTOH, there's a multitude of clones out there, each one with a different set of issues I guess.
I feel the need to chime in here.
Certaan clones are designed as such to only work with real carts OR their own carts. I know it sounds silly, but you can run into all sorts of weird Bus conflicts. And I don't mean JUST the VT02/VT03 "OneBus".
For instance, many recent SNES bootlegs actually do complicated tricks with the bus to prevent copying. Why? Because the pirate outfit doesn't want the competetion copying their game!

I see. But the Rockman 1-6 cart, which itself is a pirate also runs well on the clone.
Anyway, I still have another clone cart on the way. I really hope that will run better, since it also has a better list of games.

Ok, the Powerpak doesn't work. It only shows "Powerpak" at the top, and "Card error" after a reset.
Akumajou Densetsu doesn't run either, so that rules out MMC5 I guess?
Akumajou Densetsu is VRC6, not MMC5.
As far as I know, bad clones should be able to run AkuDen but have a severe case of screen corruption due to a bus conflict on the PPU side of the things, due to the internal 2KB PPU nametable RAM being connected as "aways on" so they can save 1 trace worth of copper (SRSLY).
I can confirm that. Apparently, only the older ones have the required signals (CIRAM and /A13) in the cart socket.
Out of three tested famiclones, only one (an old PS1-looking glob top console with Famicom-shaped controller connectors) worked.
