Famicom to NES converter + CIC
by on (#127583)
Does anyone know what kind of CIC circumvention these converters employ? I'm about to acquire one of these and I don't want to risk damaging any of the hardware I'll be using with it, so I'd rather avoid any potentially hazardous CIC circumvention methods.

Ideally, I'd like to mod the converter and install an actual CIC on it. Has anyone here ever attempted something like this? Does anyone have any advice for me before I go through with this? Thanks!

From the article: "Anyone who’s a collector of unlicensed games will be familiar with the way some of these things turn on: an eerie blank image followed by the startup screen."

That sounds like Codemasters games, which use a charge pump to stun the CIC. Tengen games, which use a CIC clone, don't start this way. So playing King of Kings would produce stun pulses, whether it's Namco's version through the adapter or Wisdom Tree's version.

There's no pictures of its inside that I can find, so I can't help with that question, but I'm confident that you could desolder whatever's there and replace it with a modern CIC.

You could also just disable both the lock and stunner, which seems a little easier to me.

Oddly enough, my Honey Bee adapter actually had a spot on the board for a CIC, wired identically to a real NES cart. After pulling out the badly-soldered mishmash of a "stunner" circuit, I dropped in a CIC from an old Tag Team Pro Wrestling cart, and it worked just fine.

I wonder if they had plans for a CIC clone, or if they knew people would do this mod themselves?

Heh, I didn't even remember having posted about this in the past!

Well, I guess I'll have to open the adapter and see if I can hack an original CIC in.

Got the new converter today... It's like new, looks like it's been inside its box since the 80's/90's and has never been used. I will probably open it later to see how it handles the CIC.

Yesterday I checked my old converter, and there aren't any components on it at all. It just routs the pins, nothing more. I'm considering experimenting with that one first, adding a CIC and an audio wire, before messing with the brand new one.
