Where can I buy a PowerPak? Are they discontinued?
by on (#151694)
The only site I can find talking about selling the PowerPak, retroUSB, says it's unavailable. It says "temporarily", but it's been unavailable at least since I started working on my game in May; has it been discontinued? Is there another site selling them? Everdrive seems to be available, but as far as I can tell it doesn't support the MMC5 extended attributes mode I'm using.

ebay or nintendoage are probably the best options currently. I don't find any on ebay right now, so maybe set up a saved search and wait for one to pop up. otherwise put up a wtb thread on NA. retrousb will likely have them in stock again at some point, but who knows when.

if you're really in a pinch, you could bite the bullet on a real mmc5 cart and install sockets for use with (e)eproms. you could save the original mask roms to put it back together when you're done if you need one of the expensive carts with wram.

Aren't flash carts forbidden on ebay?

No idea. Maybe if someone bothers to report it, but I haven't heard much about flash cart listings getting pulled. There are a couple completed listings for powerpaks, and that's where I got mine a few months ago. There are also several current and completed everdrive listings.

I'm pretty sure I bought the last one in stock because the day mine came it said it was unavailable. This was just a few months ago though. Looks like you'll have to wait for BunnyBoy to make some more. Sorry man.

Also why would ebay ban flash carts?

Potential for use to run infringing copies of video games. See the policies Enabling Duplication of Copy-Protected Material and Mod chips, game enhancers, and boot disks policy.

To prevent lawsuits from even being filed in the first place, eBay sometimes makes policies that are stricter than what copyright law requires. One obvious example of such a policy that is stricter than what copyright law requires is the recordable media policy, which prohibits some resales that are otherwise perfectly lawful under the "exhaustion of distribution right after first sale" rule (17 USC 109 and foreign counterparts).

Man... I sure hope he makes more. I just got mine a few months ago, and then accidentally shipped it out with a console that I had sold...

No reply when I asked the buyer about it. Sigh...

They sure don't seem to have anything against sellers spamming ebay with reproduction copies of games which were licensed in the US, for $100-$200 bucks a pop:

If you report those to eBay, they'll probably cancel them. Just because something's against their rules doesn't mean they're capable of enforcing them flawlessly.

If enough people report a seller's items then ebay will eventually get around to it. That's the theory at least.

I bought my powerpak roughly 2 months ago from Retrousb.com I remember narrowly getting my order in. The owner of the site posted he was going in for some type of surgery. Shortly after that, they became "unavailable". Just my guess (and most likely means nothing) is that physical therapy is taking a bit longer than expected. I would suggest just waiting a bit longer and hope for the best.

Did you get your PowerPak shipped to you in the two months since you ordered?

Yes I ordered the powerpak and while waiting for the shipping status to change, the website had a banner about surgery. Luckily I received it a few days later. I am just guessing, but I bet the recovery from the surgery is taking a bit longer and the creator just does not have time to keep up with the website and products. Again, just a guess though.

For the sake of hoping they go to homebrewers, I wanted to post that EverDrives are currently available. I just picked one up to replace my much missed PowerPak, and there are now four left. I'm not sure if the EverDrives are available more frequently than the PowerPaks, but considering how many times I've looked to see if PowerPaks were available, and since I just looked last night and EverDrives weren't available then either, thought some of you might want to know.
