HVC 001 with 2 different Sram question and Repair "Fixed"
by on (#165255)
I've got a Famicom with 2 different Srams. I'm wondering if one of them has been replaced once before?
It doesn't look re-soldered so I'm not sure, is this common for Nintendo.

This console has garbled video and freezes once I press start (Gradius 2) I was thinking maybe the Wram might be the problem. Any thoughts?

Here is whats in the console
U4: TMM2115BP-15
U1: 6116ALSP-15

Almost all ICs should have a datecode somewhere on them. e.g. on my NES-CPU-07 mainboard, the Sharp-manufactured SRAMs are LH5116-15 8851, indicating that they were manufactured in the 51st week of 1988.

Are the datecodes of the two ICs close? (i.e. within a year) If so, it's more likely it's original.

Thanks that answers my question. both original
8610 -U1
8608 -U4

edit:
Just purchased some replacement ram chips MB8416A-15L-SK, I believe these will work. If anyone knows for sure let me know. Thanks

Sram chips came in, I can say the replacements seem to work well cause it didn't change my problem. :( I also tried to switch out the cpu and ppu. No change :(. Guess the next thing to do is check all the traces from the connector.

edit: Going to try the 74ls373 first.

edit again: 74ls373 was the problem, working perfectly after replacing it. I ended up changing both Sram CPU and PPU before finding the problem. Good thing I saved the chips.

Ugh, somehow when I answered the question about the date codes I didn't think to answer the other question.

Most often, it's a problem with the cartridge contacts. But to help diagnose, could you include a picture of the kind of video garbage you're talking about?

Nicely done, I think your Famicom is ready for a NESRGB now if you want to go that route.

Thanks!, I'm trying to wait out for the High def mod. But I am looking at the NesRgb mod. I'll more than likely mod a front loader though.

If you are waiting for the HiDef NES mod for the Famicom, be prepared to wait a long time. Kevtris is not really interested in designing the custom power board required for the HiDef NES mod as Tim Worthington did for his NESRGB. However, the HiDef NES mod works well with a front loader.

Yeah The front loader is what I'm planning to mod. I've got one ready to go when it comes out.
