[Help] NES Swirly Video Output?
by on (#183350)
Hello NESdev! About last week, I began using my NES after having it not be used for about a year. Right off the bat, I noticed something was wrong with the video output, it was all swirly and especially noticable with games that use a solid color as a background. I firgured it was just a one time fluke so I simply ignored it however the problem is still occuring. If anyone knows what the problem might be, the help would be appreciated! :D Also, here are some pictures that might help you get a beter idea of what is happening: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/wuz6fnrevm1t5cp/AABq6PZInt6lhDBrEca8tbBFa?dl=0

It looks like you're picking up interference from something. Have you tried using different cables?

I tried using different av cables and even the coaxial cable that came with the system but still no luck :(
Do you think that it could possibly have something to do with my tv then?

Looks like a moire pattern. It happens when one intermittent signal is overlaid over something else and is slightly off on spacing (like pixel widths). Like when someone is wearing a striped shirt on TV.

Does your TV have any other scaling options?

It can't be "scaling", as I've seen swirls just like those on a CRT.

Assuming that scaling is the same as aspect ratio, It was set to 4:3. Do I need to change it to 16:9?

Edit: I set it to 16:9 and it didn't effect the swirls at all :(

That looks like magnetic interference at/on the display itself. Are you using a CRT? If so, it may need to be degaussed. Does it auto-degauss when powering on? (My Sony Wega, for example, does this). You can also try physically re-positioning the CRT to face a different cardinal direction (N/E/S/W, NOT rotating it/putting it on its side!) -- yes I'm serious.

I have seen this phenomenon many times over the years, and the root cause kinda varies (sometimes interference, sometimes magnetic interference, sometimes misaligned convergence within the CRT (though that tends to look more like "off-centre shadowing -- hard to describe in text")).

We've seen these exact symptoms before.

Best guess is power supply firmness. Maybe try recapping the AV modulator?

I've tried using two different outlets on my walls but still nothing. I'd like to try recapping the AV modulator but where exactly is it located and what do I need to replace it?

Yeah, this won't be something you fix by using a different outlet in your house.

You could try a different wall wart—such as a modern DC switching power supply. Something in the range of 7VDC to 14VDC (polarity doesn't matter; the original NES takes 9VAC). The A/V modulator is the silver-colored rectangular prism inside the NES; see the recapping guide at Console5.

Most likely the big filter capacitor in the RF modulator is shot. It's 2200 uF at 16V so it should be very easy to find.

The power supply and AV section should be re-capped. I've seen this in a few front-loader units. At least, the large filter cap is a good starting point.
