Hi, I have installed a few sockets in so far 2 types of carts but I like to have a sertain level of pride in my workmanship if I choose to show outher people and ugley cart wih a hole in it is not that great looking. Any ideas on how to make them all nice looking
paint them!
you can have the holes be eye sockets of your cartridge monster ^_^
Don't use DIP sockets. Use DIP-to-something-else adapters, where the something-else is a smaller form factor for a 5.0 V flash chip. Then build a hinged access door in the cart.
Or are the smaller form factors available exclusively in 3.3 V?
Also, what makes the hole so ugly? How did you cut the hole? If you do it nicely with a Dremel or other similar tool.. it doesn't look THAT bad.

There is definitely 5V FlashROMs available in PLCC (as well as EEPROMs, I guess), and they'll fit the cart case with some sockets, but you'll need to make your own PCB to plug them in, because I doubt any PLCC to DIP adaptator can fit the case.

They definitely won't. I had previously considered producing my own insanely low-profile PLCC to DIP adapters (that would also wire the ROM to a MaskROM pinout). But I realized as nifty as it the idea is, it's unlikely to be popular enough to make up for the setup cost of the PCB layout.
