so i patched the rom with the .ips file to translate it to english, but it messed up the rom. in FF1, when i go to talk to someone in the first castle, it freezes up. i used the lunar ips program. is there something i did wrong? i even tried an already patched rom and the same thing happened. here is the patch:

Are you building a reproduction? It uses a specific MMC1 configuration called SXROM. The retrousb website sells a MMC1 board that can do this I believe.
it has this problem in emulators as well, so i believe it would be the patched rom. also tried on power pak. the original rom works fine, its when you apply the patch that game freezes up,
Joe
That hack was made in 2001, back when NESticle was still popular. I'm not at all surprised that it doesn't work on either the real hardware or modern emulators.

I have seen people make repros of it, so it can work on real hardware. As far as retrousb selling them, its way more expensive and time consuming than just using a real nes board =)
i have a repro, but have the same problem. also if it doesnt work on the power pak, then it wont work in real hardware

Unless something changed, the PowerPak doesn't have proper SXROM support.

Are you saying that MMC5 games won't work on my real NES? Crap! =)
Seriously though, you can't make that statement. Mapper emulation on the PowerPak is less than perfect, so it's possible that a game won't work on it because of flawed mapper implementation, while it'd run on the actual mapper.
ok i know the power pak is glitchy, but what about virtuanes and nestopia? they both freeze up
Soneone have to find the trurth about SXROM yet. I've only seen two screenshots of it on a site that have been removed after no more than one week. Nobody really knows how the connections are made on the circuit. We only assumed things in a rush.
And if FF1+2 works in powerpack, then it either does CRC checks, or assume banswtiched SRAM for all MMC1 games which writes to $A000-$DFFF registers more than once.
Since FF1+2 only bankswitch SRAMs only when you select a game, changes are that one game will work but each one you change the game the other's saves are erased. I guess that's what would happen in Nesticle and most emulators that doesn't do CRC checks (and possibly PowerPak as well).
VirtuaNES and Nestopia detects the FF1+2 ROMs I guess with CRCs, so it's possible to save in both games at once and get a 16kb .sav file.
And making a repro of this game is NOT possible without doing a really lot of modifications on a SOROM board which I doubt is an easy find. I'd rather make 2 different repros or doing is with a brand new board.
What about a properly patched rom put back onto the I&II board? Shouldn't this be possible?
I run a famicom with a convertor for US rpgs and any repro work I try so for me using the original cart is an option.
This would get around the mapper issue since the proper mapper is right there, yes?

In theory, yes. Assuming the hack was done properly, the original FF1&2 cart is ideal for making a english FF1&2. It would be SXROM.
As far as I know, FF1+2 hasn't been translated properly and the translation patches for FF1 and FF2 can't simply be joined together as there were significant changes to the code, particularly involving saving.
It would be AWESOME to see a proper working patch for FF1+2, but I'm not really holding my breath.
