Started playing this game yesterday and I gotta tell ya, I had a lot of trouble with the first dungeon. This is definitely going to be a tough one.

I was just wondering what everyone's opinions are on this game. Like it, don't like it? Reactions on playing it for the first time. Anyone prefer it to the original?

Also if anyone has any tips or tricks to making it easier. Anything would be appriciated

Love it. I prefer it to the original. I remember the first time playing it and it was pure magic (dat title screen and opening music!) You gotta grind a shitload to level up (farming for P bags) before going in too deep. Also prioritizing how you distribute skill points each level makes a big difference.

I love the game gets easier as you level. Death mountain is all I'm going to say. I remember my brother and I getting so annoyed at that part.

Very tough game, but after several tries I was able to beat it. It really is a good game that I feel doesn't get the justice it deserves. Good luck and keep us posted on your progress!

I beat it pre-internet with Nintendo Power, I think. It was tough, but I liked it -- and still do. The one thing I will say about Zelda 2 is that the difficulty curve is kind of wonky. It starts out challenging, gets very hard very fast, then eases out for a bit after Death Mountain but continues to get even harder. I think it's a great game, and I wouldn't mind seeing a new platformer Zelda, but I do not prefer it to the original. My tips would be to get good at jump-slashing darknuts in the face, that takes them down easy. Also, avoid enemies you don't have to fight and can get away from, to preserve your health. Don't be afraid to use spells like shield for a challenging room of normal enemies, since the game is pretty generous with magic jars (I had the habit of never using magic unless I had to, which was a mistake). Always leave magic for the Life spell. Grinding for levels does help a bit but is only worth doing at certain points in the game: it's more important to get the container upgrades.

What I always did was go through each dungeon but don't collect the orb that automatically levels up your shit at the end of a dungeon, go through the game and grab those orbs last so you don't have to grind for levels 7, 8 and some of 6, it'll save you a lot of time.

I agree, this game is brutally difficult.

Zelda II was the first NES game I ever owned outside of the pack-in SMB, Duck Hunt, World Class Track Meet cart.

My cart still has my original save game from 1989.

It's a great game, use your magic intelligently, such as Shield and Jump, to get through Death Mountain.

The worst Zelda game, IMO. Not that I hate it; I do like it but I like every other one more. I beat it as a kid but shudder when I think about playing it now.

The game definitely gets easier the more you level up...but the secret is hanging with it long enough to get some levels under your belt.

I prefer the original LoZ (my favorite NES game ever), but this is still a bonified classic. Unique gameplay for a Zelda game, and it gets rewarding the longer you hang in there!

It's definitely fun. I love the side scrolling stuff. I feel like a Mario game, like I have completely control over him. I just have to be more skilled haha

What I mean is, I love Castlevania but the control of Simon or Trevor isn't as good as a Mario game or a Mega Man game. I don't know if what I'm saying makes sense haha sorry.

The control in the original Castlevania is super stiff, but gets better with each entry on the NES IMHO.

Definitely way better on Castlevania III but still not as good as other games. In my opinion.

Is it the lack of being able to control your jump in mid-air?

Zelda II is my favorite in the entire series. The game has the deepest and most rewarding combat engine. Love the game!

It's tough for sure, but it's one of those games that makes you feel like you really accomplished something by the time that you beat it.
