My only issue with the game is the Amiibo implementation. It's $35 if you want to take advantage of the extra on-disc content, which is insane. Luckily it's only replaying levels with different equipment to get a few sets of gear, which isn't a big deal, but I wish any amiibo worked for something.

I guess I better cancel the party
Yeah unfortunately.  It doesn't even sound like you can have 2 people play locally and join you online. It sounds like this game has a very heavy focus of playing online. Local multiplayer is an afterthought. I'm all for online multiplayer but I didn't think that the online portion would be 90% of the total game. In several reviews people state not to buy the game for its single player campaign and it's very short and doesn't do anything particularly impressive.

The local multiplayer is a tough one. I'm not sure as I thought the game needed the gamepad. I could be wrong about that. All I know is if you play online you CAN join your friends but it's random on what team you are on. I'm also not sure how they are going to deal with a full lobby. Will you have to keep search? Will you spectate like Mario Kart? Will you sit at a mini game until a spot becomes available? I'm just not sure. The one thing I am sure of is you CANNOT party up with you friends before a match. Even in August you'll need 4 people to party up.... it can't be 3 and 1 random. All or nothing which is also kinda lame.

That last part sounds really lame. As far as waiting for matches they give you a few minigames to play while you're waiting which is kind of neat. But I dunno....I'm so hesitant to get this now. The gameplay sounds awesome but I'm tired of buying games that I'll play for a few hours then never touch again. I feel like it might get old very quickly.

Most other FPS style games are not designed for kids, too many adults and cussing, etc.  This is a game designed for kids that everyone happens to enjoy.  Better to not have open mics and to keep this game light and fresh like many other Nintendo franchise games.

If it's any consolation, from my experience with the demo (which only included 2 maps) I didn't get tired of either one in 3 hrs and wanted to keep playing them, even using the same weapon set I liked. That's probably not saying much though, since they were spaced apart of course .  In the full game if the single player is 8-10hrs, multiplayer should last at least 10hrs (I expect closer to 20) before getting tired of it. So I guess if that amount of time isn't worth the early purchase, that's up to you and waiting until August might be a good idea.

I don't mind getting it near launch and seeing how long it lasts because then I can pick it back up in August when there's more reasons to play it and extend the value.

If kids are their worries, then they should implement parental controls.

You can't get online with more than one person (ie. no online local multiplayer unless you have 4 consoles).

Offline mode will be a one-on-one balloon type thing from what I found. One person uses the tablet the other uses the pro controller. Again, no 4 play offline modes, as far as I know.

It's basically designed to be a single player multiplayer game if that makes any sense. Pretty poor decisions in my opinion. Having said that I will still be buying it.

One more thing that concerns me is if online multiplayer is the focus of this game, what will happen when a couple years down the line the servers are shut down? I always think about games and how I'll enjoy them years down the road. Mario Kart Wii was a lot of fun online until they shut down the servers last year. I know we're talking 5-7 years from now but it still concerns me.

I think at this point I'll wait it out and read more reviews and such before deciding. I'm not much of a multiplayer game player. I mostly play single player games. I still think I would have fun with this but I feel like the fun would fizzle out way sooner than I'd like it to.

I am so fking sick of buying half finished games at release...

Back in the day a companys reputation rested on the quality of the games they put out. Nowadays we just pay 60$ to wait for the patch... We should demand more from our media...

Nintendo knows their consumers though.  They know that if they are putting a game in front of a kid, they aren't really paying much attention to parental controls.  I know many kids who are 7 and 8 playing GTA type games with cussing, murder, etc, and nobody bats an eye anymore.  Look at the youth of the world today, a generation raised by TV and video games.  That's a topic for another time, but I do think if we are being limited to 2-3 minute matches then no voice chat is actually a good thing.

Yeah it's insanely frustrating.

I bought a xbone and the masterchief collection on black friday. Attempted to play halo for about a month and it was just beyond broken and unplayable. From i hear it took months to completely fix and it was because they rushed it for christmas when they knew it was buggy.

Saw the commercial for splatoon last night, looks pretty cool. Commercial was catchy lol

That's a bit of exaggeration. At launch there's at the very least 20hrs worth of stuff to do. It sounds like they wanted to fine-tune some details, but are letting us have the finished game early which is a plus to me. That's an advantage of modern technology.

If anything I'd be complaining about the hundreds of 2-4hr games of the NES-SNES era .

My son... gives me Helpful Nintendo Hints that are far too complex for the adult mind to comprehend. Here's a verbatim example: "OK, there's Ganon and miniature Ganon and there's these things like jelly beans and the miniature Ganon is more powerfuller, because when you touch him the flying eagles come down and the octopus shoots red rocks and the swamp takes longer." And the hell of it is, I know he's right. - Dave Barry

Nope unfortunately not. At least not until a future update.

I know. Not that I have a ton of friends that actually play Nintendo (they're "too cool") but it would be a great feature that seems like a shoe-in but apparently not. There are essentially only 3 modes... a single player campaign which I've heard ranges from 5 to 10 hours (I have no idea how accurate these numbers are), a 1-on-1 local multiplayer battle which is supposedly a bit laggy/buggy, and the online multiplayer which you can only join as a single player and battle other random players. That's it.

I grabbed the game at Target this morning along with the Amiibo 3 Pak and a Jigglypuff. I was gonna tear into it all but I thought it would be a nice surprise for my kid if I wrapped it all up and have it to her as a present for being good and helping me out after my surgery. I just have to wait a few more hours for her to get out of preschool. I can't wait to play it and the Amiibo functionality looks pretty cool.

I'm still undecided. If it were a budget title I'd probably pick it up today but for $60..I dunno. Like I said it does look like a lot of fun but I have no shortage of things to play and from the sound of it this game will not last me very long in its current incarnation, but that's probably just me.

I picked up my copy today with a Pac Man amiibo. My splatoon amiibo are on the way from Walmart.com.

Super excited to delve into this one. Hone my FPS skills (which aren't great) and power up my squid in 1P, play 1 v 1 with the kids and online after bedtime. I do wish me and the kids (total 3) could immediately play on the same team, but sounds like in August we can do it if we recruit Mom or the dog.

As for glichy games, I really have not found any of Nintendo's Wii U offerings to be glitch broken. Sure MK8 online had that lobby drop problem, but that was minor given the breadth of that incredible game and the patch came quickly enough. I think there will be PLENTY to do content wise before the updates start coming.

For those of you that picked it up, hope to see you online tonight. (NIN ID: DadE08)

Going to pick it up when I get off work in 4 hours. Been debating on the Splatoon amiibos, but I don't have any so I'll probably not pick anything up right now. They are cute though. Four hours can't go by fast enough.
