Dain, you really need to add a Like function to the forum.

That's a sure-fire way to bring in more people, but I'm not sure it would bring in the right people.

I hate forums that have the like or Rep systems. It's all favortism bullshit. Do you really ever post your true opinion when you're worried about rep? I think not.

You know a lockdown I think is extreme. I think my idea was a good one but that got swept up too unfortunately. There's no reason to close the boards to new people, but there should be roadblocks against using the commerce sections. I'm talking no lurkers and registration required to use those areas and only after a small grace period + posting some on the boards and not the kind of post upping bs just to get around it which would deserve a ban. A temporary block to earn those areas, say a month and 25 posts or so would be enough. It would discourage people showing up just to peddle warez or try and stir up prices on games they want to sell and it would blind the lurkers who could use the site as a tool to benchmark awareness and prices on games and speculation on others with the recent junk of snapping up a game everywhere big to shove up the prices. Hurdles I would welcome, but a locked door no.

Your idea wasn't any better than this. It was another elitest suggestion.

I think new users are a great thing, and keeping an open community helps keep NA in a positive light. I'm glad Dain chimed in, because 1.) I'm hungry and didn't know what to have for dinner, and 2.) Soup sounds fantastic.

Not that I think anything is actually going to come out of this discussion, but I'm not sure I understand the request to begin with. I really don't think things have been that bad. I keep hearing about these horrible new users, yet I don't see them causing mischief around the forums.

If anything, I think we need many more users! I feel there is a pretty solid base of people here, but there could definitely be a lot more discussion / trading going on. I don't want to logon each time and see 500 new threads, but I don't think we are anywhere near 'maximum capacity.' The mods and admins have been doing a good job of keeping the place clean, and I'm sure they can handle the occasional bad apple.

Also, keeping the site open to more people means more people to share their crazy finds, more people to buy and sell from us, more discussion, and maybe some different opinions that we haven't heard before.

We could always look at this type of thing (edit: other ways to solve the problem besides closing registration) if there was REALLY a problem with people misusing the forums, but I think things are actually going very well!

We have 15 active mods and 3 admin. That seems like more than enough people to be on top of member misconduct. There is a page moderator button on every post which should make it easy to flag down one. So far the mod team here really seems be doing right by locking threads and keeping this place minty. I haven't seen these trolls, but if you do then report them. Banned users should be able to be IP banned and mods/admin should be able to check for dupe accounts if some shenanigans are going on.

Closing registration seems to be an extreme measure to take care of minor site upkeep with that the mod team seem to already be doing a good job of.
While I appreciate your kind words, PLEASE DO NOT USE THE PAGE MODERATOR BUTTON UNLESS IT IS AN EMERGENCY, a pm to one of us is sufficient the vast majority of the time.

Believe me I wish everyone, especially new users, would read the FAQ.  I don't think closing of the site is the answer however.  One of the things that makes NA great is the welcoming environment we have, at least in my opinion.

NA was and still is the only gaming site I am a member of, if a referral would have been required I never would have been able to join.  I didn't know anyone on the site before I joined and now consider many to be good friends, so that would have been a real shame.

Emergency example pls?? (not being a smarthmouth or anything, I really always wondered what would be an emergency to page a moderator)

Is this all you can eat soup with chips and salsa like chillis?

^^^ I find the continued mod/admin complaints about the "page" button kind of amusing. The same gripe, from their end, has been present for at least a few YEARS. Maybe it would be worth figuring out a better way to do it, since there seems to be no legitimate use for them, as they stand now, given that the literally spam every mod/admin simultaneously.

An example would be if someone were posting hardcore porn, or other extremely objectionable content that needed to be dealt with immediately. Can you please lock my thread is not an emergency.

There has been a recent addition to the page moderator feature as a matter of fact Arch, go ahead and click on the link now.

I was thinking more along the lines of having the option to page the "local mod" for that subforum.

It's not always clear who is "in charge" of each subforum, so PM-ing the appropriate mod may not be obvious to the average user.

It's not obvious because it isn't broken down like that. Any mod can be of assistance, we don't break them down by subforum. Pick your favorite (or least favorite).

And for people not familiar with how to find a moderator. If you click on the Directory in the top right corner, you can sort by Mod Squad.

It has been awhile since I registered but why not stiffen up the registration process. For example one of the other sites I frequent has a HUGE TOS and RULES section and before a new member signs up they have to read through the entire TOS/Rules and take a small 5/9 random questionnaire test before the membership is complete.

Sure people and just rush to the end and take the test but it would FORCE them to read certain parts of the rules/tos regardless when having to take the small test.

Just a thought.
