Goofy Foot

I wanted to share my Goofy Foot project with you all, since The Brewery NA crew are who inspired me to put in the hard work to make it happen. In 2015 at PRGE, I met SoleGooseProductions and KHAN Games at the NA booth and was in awe of the level of RadNES that was still being developed for the NES. Seeing and playing it all there in person, is a lot different than through the images here on the forums. They really inspired me to do more than play. I studied EE for fax sakes, I needed to get in there somewhere with my iron and make a contribution to the console I love. The following day, watching the Classic Tetris World Championship finals, I was struck with the idea, that I would have the power to dominate if only my right thumb was on the D-Pad.

On my circuit board, I designed in solder jumper pads (like the H / V pads on an NES cart) so that anyone with minimal soldering skills, can switch the B / A buttons around to an A / B setup. I want everyone to have a chance to try a new way of playing.

If you decide to support this alternative way of playing, let me know that you are a part of the NA community and I’ll include something special.

Make those into a switch.  People won't know which setup they want, and might even want to change for different games.

I was afraid that a switch would hinder the classic design.  I had considered a small slide switch on the top in the middle, out of the way of the action.  Nothing is set in stone so if functionality over a classic look is what the people want, I can make that happen.  I've been on the fence about it for a long time.

Using a nice small dipswitch would work. You could have it on the board so you would need to open the controller to change it, that way it's not hard at all to do and you have a classic look.

I would say the small slide switch at the top wouldn't detract at all.

Supported by the way, for those keeping track...

Dude!

I got super busy at PRGE and didn't get a chance to talk with you. Have you gotten with Robin Mihara yet, the NWC winner? We talked about his need for something exactly like this for the Classic World Tetris Championship. I believe he taps quicker with his right hand and wanted to capitalize on that by swapping sides by trying to play upside down. He would be a great spokesperson if you haven't already teamed up.

-------------------------

My best friend's sister's boyfriend's brother's girlfriend heard from this guy who knows this kid who's going with the girl who saw Ferris pass out at the Let's Play Gaming Expo last night. I guess it's pretty serious.

Oh, my WTB thread is very popular. The sportos, the motorheads, geeks, sluts, bloods, wastoids, dweebies, Richard craniums - they all adore it. They think it's a righteous thread.
I'd also like to add that I've got my father's gun and a *scorching* price guide for aftermarket Nintendo games.
Between Dragon Warriors and nothing... I'll take Dragon Warriors - for any of my FT/FS/FO items.

I think the best way to use this is to invite your friends over for a party night with a 2 or 4 player game and then give them the goofy foot at the last min before starting the game. And then after they play it and freak out be like "dude, don't you remember it was always that way. "

Even though I personally like the D-pad to be on the left hand side of the controller, this new controller design might have some advantages in some certain games.

This controller reminds me of playing TI calculator games since the calculators have the d-pad on the right-hand side, too.

Also, I don't think this is as useful as having a reversed modern controller. Being right/left-handed has more of an effect on precise analog sticks than it does for d-pads. It's still a cool product for the lefty's who feel left-out, though.

I wonder if the Switch will have left/right control switching.

I'm right handed and I backed this. Since jumping on the Atari bandwagon, I cannot decide if I prefer left or right hand joysticks so I built an ambidextrous controller and I find myself switching hands all the time during gameplay. For multibutton games, I definitely need that extra dexterity afforded by buttons controlled by my right fingers though. I saw the KS for goofyfoot and I backed it for the novelty of owning one. Nintendo set the standard for left hand Dpad play with the Famicom/NES and lefty joystick with Donkey Kong.

I hope the video review helps boost sales. We definitely need to get the word out and time's a wasting...

Make those into a switch.  People won't know which setup they want, and might even want to change for different games.

+1. If a switch isn't feasible, I think A should be on the outside by default though. Makes motions like run and jump (hold B, tap A) a bit easier.

I was afraid of spoiling the classic look with a B/A / A/B switch, but functionality wins over appearance, so I have designed a small switch on top.  The B/A setup allows for games, like Punch Out, establishing: B - Left Jab and A - Right Jab.  However, playing a platformer is a lot more comfortable in the A/B mode.  It allows you to run/fire with the tip of your thumb and jump by rolling back your thumb, what we are all used to.

The Kickstarter has less than 2 weeks to go.  Any help spreading the word would be greatly appreciated.  You all rock! \m/

HA!  The hall effect sensor is acctually a great idea!  I could use one on the boards I drop into the OG Gamepads, that way you can switch from Classic to Goofy.  But I've got to focus on the project at hand... stop distracting me with great ideas.  Save that for the Goofy Foot Mach II version.

Don't cram in unnecessary tech. Those contactless sensors cost more and aren't that great either. Way too much unnecessary actuation and you can't rest your finger on the button without registering a pulse. Touch screen games that emulate buttons are terrible because the lack of tactile feedback. Phones and tablets are only good for "tap and swipe" style casual gameplay for this very reason.

Also try to get the word out to those big youtube celebs. If someone with 100k+ subscribers mentions this device, it could mean the difference between success and failure. Your campaign appears to be flatlining currently, and I've done all I can to back at one controller...

I agree with Kosmic StarDust. Keep the initial product as simple and reliable as possible, and use Youtube to advertise. I would keep the fancy electronics for future upgrades.

Hall effect is for measuring direction from magnetic field, not a button you press. So flipping the controller over would swap the button layout automatically. Not actually useful because the buttons would still be at the wrong vertical location for one of the layouts unless they are placed in the center.

I noticed ferris fially added your kickstarter to the NA front page news.
http://nintendoage.com/index.cfm?...

EDIT: According to the Kicktraq page, three new backers pledged on the 29th of Decmber, the same day Ferris posted the blog.

EDIT2: I would still be interested in purchasing a replacement PCB sould you decide to produce them, even if the campaign fails to generate the necessary funds. I also want the digital album regardless.

Bump. 3 days left and 66% left to reach the goal. One massive last minute push and this project could still succeed?

The fact that you showed your support is still appreciated! If you’d like to follow along with the creator’s next steps, stay tuned to their updates. You can even drop them an encouraging message or comment on their project page.

Thanks again for supporting this project.

EDIT: I noticed in the final 24 hours, two backers accounted for a $4000 increase in funding.

Was this campaign "pumped" by a superbacker in the eleventh hour???

Ah man, I didn't notice it got that close. I was the $676 bump three days out... or maybe the $500 before it. One of those two.
