Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the weekly contests!  I'm getting things started a little early this week since I won't be around at 10 PM to post the contest.  This week's game is an arcade favorite and a first time game in the weekly contests.  Get ready for some Popeye.  Here are the rules:
  • Play on Player 1, Game B
  • Play until Game Over.  To get your score, start a new game and immediately pause the game.  Your score will be in the Top Score spot.
  • If you roll the score, take a picture right before you roll the score and right after.  This goes for each roll of the score.
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Arcade

The contest ends Sunday, 12/8/13 at 10 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

I have always sucked at this game going back to the Atari version and on. Perhaps some more seasoned vets can give some guidance on strategies?

Been practicing on game A. What's the difference between it and game B?

The most notable difference is that the Sea Hag appears in the upper right corner starting from the beginning of the game. The difficulty is also higher than on Game A.

I remember playing the arcade version as a kid and I wasn't very good at it if I recall. I haven't played the NES version in about 2 years and after firing it up this afternoon it looks like I'm really going to need some practice.

I put a few rounds in so far. My top was only around 47,000 but I can't figure out yet if I'm going to be able progress my skills. If people are really going to be rolling scores and what not, I have a long way to go .

I haven't played game B yet but my top game A score so far was a little over 60k,so I have work to do as well.

A few helpful tips.... Don't chase Bluto around when you eat the spinach. Be on the stairs at a level above or below him and wait for him to come to you as he will pace back and forth at the level he is on. Once he is near you,go down the stairs and BAM! Also every heart/note/letter you collect while powered up with spinach is worth double what it normally is. And the buzzards can be punched without the spinach.

Fun game so far. What constitutes point racking? Am I allowed to hit the bonus points sections (example, the bell on level 1 for 30 pts, or the catapult punch for 500 on level 2) if I'm using that pathway anyway? Same deal with buzzards or Bluto with the spinach, if its in my way already fair game?

Yeah, if it's in your way, it's fair game. I don't people to stand around and farm the skulls the sea hag drops for hours on end since there's no timer in the game. Same goes for the buzzards and anything else you could just kill for hours on end to run up the score.

EDIT: old score, and an illegitmate one at that

DOUBLE EDIT: turns out nope, it actually would have been legitimate, but it's still inferior

I played a little earlier. Even though there is no timer, if one of the items from Olive Oil lands on the ground, you have only a few seconds to grab it or you will lose a life. Since you have to catch every item that Olive Oil drops, and the stage is cleared once all of the items are caught, point-racking should be minimal.

I'll second this.  Olive Oyl's items function as a timer in this game, so point racking is impossible.

My normal strategy on the ship level is "kill lots of buzzards, collect stuff, repeat."  Are we saying that this is illegal for this contest?

I didn't know that about Olive Oyl's items.  To be honest, while I was playtesting the rules for this game, I never let one of the items touch the bottom of the screen.  I always grabbed them higher up to see how to maximize points.  Since you will lose a life if you don't collect one of the items, I'm okay with removing the point racking rule.  Is everyone okay with that as well?

Definitely, no need of a point racking rule since you only have a limited time to grab items once they're on the floor.

The dropped items definitely function as a timer,so the elimination of this rule is definitely a good thing.
