I remember playing some when I was younger like UN Squadron & Space Megaforce on Snes! Also played Twin Eagle II alot at the local arcade! Wasnt till recently, over the last 5 years that I really started falling in love with the genre and trying to seek out more obscure awesome titles! Here's my collection:

Sega CD: Android Assault, Keio Flying Squadron, Lords of Thunder, Robo Aleste, Silpheed, Sol Feace

Sega Saturn: Batsugun, Battle Garegga, Blast Wind, Dodonpachi, Donpachi, Galactic Attack, Gekirindan, Gun Frontier, Gunbird, Radiant Silvergun, Shienryu, Sonic Wings Special, Soukyugurentai, Strikers 1945, Strikers 1945 II

I have a most of these too, I'm really a big fan of the Cave stuff on 360. I recently picked up a Striker 1945 Plus Neo Geo MVS cabinet, I think it was released on PS2 and PSP. You should get Triggerheart Exelica from the XBL marketplace as well. Oh, and Raiden Project on PS1.

I like them but I have zero skills in them. I see you have Neo XYX. I just got that one and can't get past level 4. It's sad, really.

Don't forget Ray Storm, and there's so many for the NES, from Alpha Mission to Gun-Nac to Recca. I've heard great things about Gradius 2 as well. On the DS Nanostray 2 is a can't miss.

Love them as well.

One that rarely gets mentions, but is actually a cool little game, is Legendary Wings on the NES. About 3/4 top down and 1/4 side scrolling, it's a great shump, albeit a little easy.

I love shooters but I am not great at them by any means.

My list is too long to type at the moment, but here is a pic of most of my Genesis shooters.

Quick honorable mentions for other systems: Blazing Lasers, Air Zonk, Sturmwind, ZanacXZanac, PopN Twinbee, Raiden IV, Gradius V, Imperium.

Vapor Trail on Genesis has one of the best first stage themes. Really gets you in the mood:

Oh man, still can't believe I missed out on deals for Vapor Trail, MUSHA, Space Megaforce too

On the other hand I did make a deal to get Sol-Deace the other day, and I played Axelay the other day and made it to the underwater cave boss. Almost beat him too (I think?)... I'm going in for round two this weekend.

Games pretty tough! I think I've got to level 5 but I havnt been able to beat it yet! Curious 2, since we're talking about NG Dev Team, have you or anyone else played Pink Bullets or Redux Dark Matters? Wondering how they are and how they compare to Neo XYX & Fast Striker!

Star Soldier: Vanishing Earth for N64

It's probably the only shmup on the system but I've watched a bunch of video and it actually looks pretty good. I'm thinking about picking it up.

I've thought about getting that as well! I think I was turned off because of some stuff I read about it but I'm willing to try anything! Has anyone played Ginga Force I think it's called? Was curious about that one..

It's OK, but nothing amazing. The controls aren't very tight, it's very short, and it's really easy. You're right, though, I can't think of another SHMUP on the system.

Yeah it's literally the only top-down shmup released in America on the N64. I'm not sure if there are any that were only released in Japan but it's possible. I mean N64 has games like Sin & punishment and Star Fox 64 which are shooters but not the traditional shmup kind.

Gotcha. For the money, I'd try to track down some of the PS1 shooters out there. Most of them are on the cheaper side, and there are a number of good ones:

RayStrom
RayCrisis
Strikers 1945
R-Types
R-Type Delta (kinda pricey)
Thunder Force V
Mobile Light Force
Einhander (kinda pricey)
Viewpoint
Gekioh: Shooter King
Vanark
Raiden Project
In the Hunt (way better than the Saturn version)
Sonic Wings Special (if you can import european games and play them, it's essentially Aero Fighters, but remixed)
Xevious 3D/G+
Philosoma
Nanotek Warrior

I'm sure there are others I'm missing...

I just reacquainted myself with an obscure title:

In the Hunt for PS1. It's got that Metal Slug graphic style but you're in a submarine. Great level design with stuff exploding everywhere around you and huge bosses.

Great title I'd recommend picking up. It also had a Sega Saturn release.

+1. It's an amazing title on the PS1.

Stay away from the Saturn version, though. It has a lot of slowdown, and the screen is about 30-40% smaller. It's downright awful on the Saturn, sadly.

Also, 1000th post! Woot!

That's awesome. I tried to make my own shmup about 10 years ago in a program called The Games Factory. It was pretty easy to use and didn't require programming but it took so much time and I just couldn't get motivated enough to finish it. I always wanted to make a game in completion though. I don't think I have the time or patience to learnt o make homebrew stuff though. I hope you get around to finishing the game!

Whenever I have friends over, I put in Giga Wing 2. Really short but love the 4 player and how over the top it is.

Super Star Soldier for the TG-16 I find to be one of the hardest.

In the Hunt on the Saturn is literally unplayable for me. I'm selling my copy next month.
