Congrats Mark! I actually could never beat this game as a kid either, so back in 2005 I did what you did: made a determined effort to conquer it once and for all. Eventually, after weeks of practice, I was able to beat it in one game with no warps and no continues and only three deaths (once on aquaducts and twice on the Dark Queen). It really is a true "gamer's game" as in it's tough but fair and you have to earn every little bit of progress you make. And unlike most games, you can't just hop back on the bike, so to speak, after not playing it for a while; trust me, if you put it down for a year, it'll be like you've never played it before. Whenever I pop it in now, I usually don't make it past level 5. Excellent game that requires high levels of hand to eye coordination. I like to call it the game that puts gamers in their place.
Thanks Basil! Thats Def impressive for sure! I want to go back and get it done with no warp too. I just know i need to put more time into level 6 and 7 to get through it the way i want too. Its funny you mention dying at the dark queen, and aquaducts, i actually was pretty decent at not losing lives there. The hardest and the most life taking spots for me where the clinger winger and some jumps in level 4, occasional mess up on the bikes in level 3, I normally would lose 1 life to the third rat race,  but seemed to get em the second try. And as you said practice practice practice. If you play this game enough and devote some serious time, it can be done and made to look easy.

I agree with what you said aswell about being very rewarding, and it is fair too. Just gotta get good at it, and the progress will come.

Absolutely! Now that I have my top-loader, it's time to finally complete the legendary titles which have eluded me since BITD (Ghosts 'N Goblins is another one). I can't think of a better game to start with than Battletoads; this is going to be one hell of a go lol. Going to start after work tonight!

Nice! Congrats on beating that game and thanks for the write up. It's a game a friend of mine and I will one day complete. Every six months or so we make an effort, usually only for a night, to see if we can get a little farther.  Of course our long term goal is to eventually beat it. I think last time we got to level 6 or 7.

Getting to level 6 or 7 in one night is very good for sure.

But imo it takes a bit of devotion to get through this thing. Like as Basil said, playing every single day, and if you take a couple weeks in between trys .......its like starting from square one again. Lot of memorization, and probably not even a weekend will get you through this. Took me about 2 weeks of casual playing every other night for an hour or two each night practicing each stage and picking up where i left off. Game is def doable, and for "back in the day" really worth the $60 price tag lol. Thank God you dont have to beat it twice like some other games like ghosts n goblins to see the true ending lol.

Edited my first post with a backstory of my love for the toads I had so much writing to do ive been adding little tid bits here and there to my first posting. Thanks again everyone for reading and the congrats. Hopefully more and more will beat this game, and hopefully i can beat it even better in time.

Congratz dude!

I still have nightmares over level 3. The best I could do was get the Level 5.

I remember playing the 2 player mode a lot with friends as a kid lol only if we knew.

It's ALWAYS the damn motorbike level; no matter what I do, it seems like I can't line up with the oncoming ramps; I'm not pushing jump or anything out of the ordinary; literally 40 minutes of failure lmao.

lol, i hear ya. Thats always the stop sign for this game for so many players. Im telling ya it gets really easy after enough practice. Are you playing on a newer tv or a crt tube style tv?? I noticed it was much easier playing this stage on an older tv then a HDTV, when the walls fly at ya they are easier to see and not a blur like on a HDTV.

Just keep practicing man. As for the ramps you can never go too far when they are on the bottom so just push down as far as ya can.  and just try and get dead centered on the ramps that are in the middle. Remember your toad will jump automatically when he hits em. You dont have to hit the jump button.

I play everything on a CRT, so no worries there. I think staying centered is my issue; I just need more time with the patterns and timing, and I'm sure it will all fall into place.

Alright so a huge update for this thread.  I have finally figured out Clinger Winger. (will be editing my first post with this newly discovered knowledge.)

So last night i went over to my buddys house (who's also a member of NA (username tyson171) for some old skool gaming.
The wives went and saw a chick flick, and we got in some retro gaming. Well i have been talking his head off the past couple weeks about conquering battletoads blah blah blah. So he wanted to see what this clinger winger level was all about, so we put in his powerpak, went to level 11 and i stook back and waited to see him get destroyed in this mess. Well........ The dude beats it on his fourth try!!! WHAT!! WHAT!!! THATS NOT POSSIBLE ??!!??! Then i play it after him and get a lead on the wheel so far that the wheel was off the screen??? I was like man why is it so easy to beat on your system/powerpak/whatever?? There has to be something wrong here? Anyways we ended up playing something else but i felt good about getting so good at the clinger winger, but also felt like a chump because my friend, who had never played it before) beat it his fourth try lol, when it took me like 100 attempts before i finally got it.

So Anyways fast forward to tonight. I wanted to beat the game without using the extra lives code. So i blaze through the game, get to clinger winger, and guess what??
TOTAL ANNIHILATION. Died like 10 times and it was game over for good! i was furious, and just could not figure out what i was doing wrong? How could i play it so awesome at his place but not on my own system in my house, how could he beat it on his 4th try? WTH is going on!!!!

Well let me tell you my fellow Toad Warriors.

THE CONTROLLER

For the past weeks i have been using a standard nes controller that was new old stock, barely ever used. I figured this would be good as it was practically new and not many hours of play. WRONG
The controllers D pad "sponge" is so stiff and not broken in, that it was giving me a horrible time getting through clinger winger. I never noticed it until i had a more used controller and compared them side by side. the used "broken in" controllers D pad felt softer and really smooth. You could almost here a click when you shifted directions. And the one i was using didnt make any sounds, and felt like a piece of hard plastic everytime i shifted. Im actually starting to wonder if the NOS controller's sponge hardened over the years from never being used?? i dunno?

So i went down got an old abused (but still responsive) NES controller, and BAM im beating clinger winger on my first try now! I cannot believe how much of a difference it makes.

I Just soared through the game (still using warps) WITHOUT the extra toads code, beat clinger winger my first try (died a few times to the boss, still figuring him out)
But lost no lives in the race and man does this "used" controller make one heck of a difference.

So the secret is to find a "broken in" controller that is responsive, but has a nice looser D PAD, so you can shift the turns quick and easy. Tyson had a strategy of never taking his thumb off the d pad and to let his whole thumb cover the d pad, and just shifting the directions by rolling his thumb. I tried it and cant seem to get used to it. But it may work for you if you already hold your controllers that way.

Try it out and see what works for you. But the right controller will really go a long way.

So after figuring out Clinger Winger, the game has been beaten without using the extra lives code.

So what's next you ask? .........To beat the game without warps,  without extra lives, start to finish, straight up all levels. Im gonna get practicing

Well it didnt take much more practice. Just plugging at level 6 and 7 a little bit and i was able to go through the whole thing now. I am so sorry if it looks like im milking this victory LOL, but honestly its the biggest gaming ahievement of my life LOL.

And figured this is a good way to wrap it up. This game is done. I have done it all. I Started out using infinite lives codes with the game genie, to then using warps and the 2 extra lives codes to beat it,
To now being able to go through the whole game, no warps, no extra lives codes. All 13 levels DONE.

Now.................................its your turn

I Made it to the Dark Queen with NO continues used, all 12 levels done in one swoop. (the only way to have your score this high is to go through all 12 levels, no warps. I had no lives left so i figured i wasnt gonna last long, so took the pic below before she got me.

Then after she killed me there, i came back and got her.

I just realized my pic should have been dated 2-10-13 as i was playing this until almost 1am lol.
Excellent Excellent Game!

This is absolutely nuts...and inspiring! Congrats on cracking one of the most legendary, difficult NES titles of all-time!

I can't wait to get that cart again so I can start!
