I'm having to take a break due to work, but come March or so I should be able to come back full-swing. Possibly mid-Feb, but I'm not counting on it.

Still working away at Hexen, and I must admit I might actually be in love with this game!

I always heard of Hexen as one of the weak links in the N64 FPS library. It was one of those early PC ports that didn't really live up to the new genres and 3D designs promised by the N64, and besides it was already an old game by the time the N64 came out. I can understand why it was overlooked, and even criticised at the time as an outdated, uninteresting and poor value choice for N64 owners.

Due to that stuff, I expected a really poor game, or at least a very boring one. But I must say, I've really gotten a lot out of my time with it! It really should be considered less an FPS and more a first person adventure, such as the early first person dungeon crawlers or even something more modern like Metroid Prime. The focus of the game is far more on the exploration and puzzle solving withing the expansive and interconnected levels, rather than the combat (which is admittedly rather bland).

The N64 is sorely lacking in decent adventure games, outside of the Zelda's and maybe one or two other games here and there. So this is a surprising and welcome addition to the genre, which is a meaty game in itself. If you've been thirsting for a good adventure game on the system, as I have, I would definitely advise giving Hexen a shot.

I'm not sure how long it will take me to beat it, I must be more than half way through, but I just wanted to get the word out early that this is one of the good ones. Just don't be fooled because it looks like Doom that this is an FPS, it really honestly isn't.

Yeah I always liked Hexen, but was not introduced to Doom or other games like it at the time. Hexen to me was very unique, and that helped with my enjoyment.

I never considered it an fps! I was actually surprised to find out it was a "doom clone" in adulthood. I've always considered it more of an adventure game. Some with Realms of the Haunting on PC, which I also love. They both take the base and add in puzzles galore and a huge world totally worth exploring.

Good to know I'm not alone on this one! No wonder this game has such a bad reputation among many people, it's been entirely misclassified! It'd be like someone playing Mario Kart 64 and saying it was bad because there's no bad guys to stomp on or power stars to collect! :S

I have Hexen on Saturn. Is the N64 version as good the Saturn one? I always thought Hexen was closer to Quake than Doom.

From what I've read about it, the N64 version is considered the best console port of the game, both graphically and in terms of content.

Really, Hexen is unlike Quake or Doom, in my opinion. Rather, Doom and Quake are far more similar to each other in terms of gameplay and overall game structure than either are to Hexen.

The simple fact that Hexen has a hub world with interconnected levels strung off from it, and that progress in one level requires traveling to and from other levels really set it apart from Quake and Doom, with their relatively linear level progression. Not to mention the primary focus of the game is exploration as opposed to combat, and the very limited selection of projectile weapons.

I feel this has got to be one of the most misunderstood games on the system! We need to get a hashtag started or something, lol!

Well... someone had to do it, right?

Just beaten Superman, on Superman difficulty of course. For added variety, I've played the whole game with a glitch/oversight active, which causes the camera to constantly zoom in and out. It was hilarious to find out that this effect can stack, and the camera can zoom in so much that it rotates the image by 180 degrees. See for yourself @ 3:55:50. Now that is an ultimate mode for the Superman pros out there.

Superman down, nice job!

I finished Blues Brothers 2000 and listened to the horribly butchered "Soul Man" which was either coded by someone who had never heard the song, or they strategically altered the melody because they didn't actually have the rights to use that specific song. Bizarre.

Finished Jeremy McGrath SuperCross 2000. That's 3 games in a row for me that end in 2000. What other games are there...

It's a hilariously janky game. If you crash into something and fly off your bike, and your bike spins around to face the other way, the game will tell you you're going the wrong direction. It's great.

Splain - You could play Wrestlemania 2000.

Still working through Aidyn. I am 40 hours in at the Shamsuk Tower. So, it feels like this should be on the down hill now.

Alright, let's see:

All-Star Baseball 2000
Bass Masters 2000
Big Mountain 2000
Blues Brothers 2000
Indy Racing 2000
International Superstar Soccer 2000
International Track & Field 2000
Jeremy McGrath Supercross 2000
Knockout Kings 2000
Madden NFL 2000
NASCAR 2000
NBA In The Zone 2000
NBA Jam 2000
NBA Live 2000
NFL Blitz 2000
NFL Quarterback Club 2000
Rally Challenge 2000
Supercross 2000
Triple Play 2000
WWF Wrestlemania 2000

There's a ton!! I guess I better get busy! Ok, starting with Jeremy McGrath, every other game I beat for this thread will end in 2000, until they're all completed. Then maybe I'll move on to the number "64"   (I'm not calling dibs or anything, everyone is still free to take any of those games.) At some point I need to help take down some sports titles, so this will help me do it.

It's like watching a guy in the canteen loading up his plate with spoon after spoon of mashed potatoes... Just one huge pile of potato on his plate, like that scene in Close Encounters. And then, he picks up a fork, lol!

I haven't made a splash on the leaderboard for a while, and Hexen is taking longer than I expected, so I thought I might as well knock a quick one off the list!

Mario Kart 64, evergreen classic, done!

I wish I were so good at Mario Kart as some of you guys on here. I just can't handle the top speeds, never could.

Same, I can barely beat 150. I have no chance on Mirror Mode, but only on N64. Usually don’t have any troubles with the other systems.

Mario Kart gives credits after the Special Cup, right? Maybe the other cups don't matter. Can you get credits on any speed?

Mario Kart 64 gives credits on special cup, both on 150cc and extra.

It's strange, but to me 64 has always been the easiest Mario Kart game, I find Super Mario Kart way harder, as well as the GBA version

Aidyn Chronicles is finished!
58 hours of boring gameplay. The story is pretty good, but the battle system is slow. It wouldn't be so bad if you didn't start every battle 3 turns from striking range. Then if there are multiple sets of enemies the next set spawns 5 to 7 turns per character away from your group. Then if they spawn casters you might as well flee that battle, because you will never make it into range before one of your team dies. If they would have done just a few things differently Aidyn could have been a good game.

Yeah I always found Aidyn a good read, but a boring play. Kinda sad, really. The vast majority of the 40-60 hour game is doing nothing.

So beyond Aidyn and ignoring sports games, what would you guys consider the top worst/most painful games to beat on the n64?
