Are there any emergency substitute games?

I wonder if it might come to that.

No!

The bulk of my game playing for these things has to be done on Monday-Wednesday.  In fact my final scores come from Wednesday night at least 75% of the time, and I'm already short on time because of the Isolated Warrior, uh, issues, on Sunday night

Yeah, it's not a great solution. I'm sure some people have even less time to throw up a score and could've missed the window with the rule change. You're more of a factor in these contest than I am (it doesn't matter to me, either way), but I could see lots of people having similar issues without being accomodated.

Stage 3-2 - 19,300

Okay, here's a participation score under the new rules.

From what I've found on the net, Stage 6 has four sub-levels: 6-1,6-2,6-3 and 6-4. When you game over, it shows the sub-level you're on, and I assume this applies to stage 6.

Because it doesn't show your score after beating the game, maybe the best option is for players to have to suicide at the start of 6-4 because that's as far as you can progress and still get a score. 6-4 is the all green level at the end.

Any player who posted a participation score meeting the first set of rules would be awarded their participation points. The new rules only 'strictly' apply to scores that rank, and in this case there's not much problem ahead.

It would have been cool to see the score between each subsection, the way some games display the score is so awkward.

Suicide at the last part sounds like the most reasonable way to play that game for a contest, I'll change the rule for a last time in that direction.

Now it is for real, no more rules change, that's about the best we can get out of that game.,

Yay. Crisis seemingly averted, thank goodness. Pegboy is right about the scoring issues with many NES games. That's when games started being more about getting to the end rather than playing for score.

Definitely, a lot of games tried to keep the tradition of arcade games where the score is almost everything, but the mechanics of many genres aren't naturally compatible with high-scores. The game has to adapt it or it makes broken score system most of the times.

Honestly, once you figure the end boss out he's pretty trivial too, so probably not the hugest deal if that is skipped

The best NES games for high score are probably the more traditional arcade type games like Kung Fu, Donkey Kong Jr., Pac-Man, Bubble Bobble, 1943, etc. as well as puzzle games like Tetris and Yoshi's Cookie. Kung Fu in particular is a very well made game in terms of its scoring and is always fun to play for points.

Glad we've got a solid set of rules, now. I can consistently get to stage 6 without continuing, so now it's just a matter of submitting a score I feel comfortable with(I'm critical of sloppy mistakes in this game).

Tough game that kind of plays like Battletoads on skates. I've only made it to stage 4 which might already be good enough for top 8 placement. You'll probably get top 3.

What's the deal with the lives farming? It's a low score/progress so Why would I want to farm lives if it increases my score?

You can do okay in a low score/progress contest if it's a tough game just by making sufficient progress and extra lives help with that. I got fifth place in the Battletoads low score contest with a maxed out score.
