Awhile back I bought one of the double door'ed shelves from walmart and I put it together to hold my games because my gf didnt want anyone to see them when they come into the house.  Well, since the collection bug has bitten me, they have out grown their current area and I need some place where I can hold them.

I am a collector who likes to play their games and not just look at them.  So I need a shelving unit that makes it easily accessible to the games.

I am thinking of something from walmart/target.

What do you guys use?

right now i am looking just for cart shelves. I haven't at this point got into the CIB collections. It is more of a financial issue rather than a not wanting to collect them.

I use these shelves, can't remember the brand name or anything but they were $20 each at walmart. each will store 145 loose carts and nes games fit perfectly, i plan on buying another one soon for my ps1/dreamcast games since my nes collection is starting to overtake them.

I wish that I could do that. One, I live in an apt and I just dont have the room. So vertical is best, and number 2, my gf would kill me if that was in out tinny apt! Thanks for the suggestions. I think I may goto wally world tonight and pick up one of those ones that KB has.

Thanks everyone for your input.

I live in a apartment aswell, I'm a college student and there just isn't much room to put them anywhere, my collection is currently in a few night tables in my room. Vertical shelves would probably be my best choice aswell, Can't wait till after college and get my own place so I can display my collection. Make sure to update us on your trip to wally world Mike, I'm looking at buying 1 of those shelves myself.

yeah those are 3 individual shelves, each was $19.99 and they hold about 145 loose nes carts each. nes games and jewel cases are a perfect fit, they also work well with boxed genesis games but it doesn't store as many.

Awesome, I think that those will work well for my budget. My gf thinks that game collecting is a little silly, but she says its better than doing drugs! Oh well, can't live with em, can't kill em!

Sounds goods, I just started collecting about a month ago and so far I love it. I also seen your post in the welcome thread, it's good to see new collectors on here. Possibly a new  person I can trade with. Once you setup the shelf you should take some pictures, so you can show off those games. I'm just wondering if the boards and such in box are going to heavy at all seeing as I don't have a form of transportation besides the bus and skytrain in Vancouver.

$20 for shelves holding 145 carts is a pretty good deal! I've got the Billies from IKEA, they are $60 and hold I forget, something like 400ish. I bought two, enough to hold the whole NES library, but you gotta buy one more to use extra shelves. That's what MRN's article recommends (check Jan2010 eZine). I tried to save a little money and make the extra shelves myself from Loew's, but after you buy all the wood and black paint and metal pegs it ends up being almost $50 anyway. And for an extra $10, you don't have to do all that drilling and painting. So I'd wouldn't recommend doing it exactly as I did...
(Curse my frugal ways, why oh why didn't I just listen to MRN!)

ETA: I was also looking at this before I settles on the billies...

http://www.mediashelving.com/Merc...

I estimated this would hold around 900-ish, same cart-holding bang for the buck, but I was concerned about sturdiness/quality, could be a piece of crap for all I know - but just thought I'd mention it. Maybe someone else has had experience with this unit?

I just did the same. Got a four foot double sided shelf with two end pieces for 20 bucks. Once i get it I want to add some extra shelves give it a white and red paint job. Should hold 600 plus carts when done.

just make one wall of your apt. the centerpiece, instead of a plant or fireplace, ha ha gf will get used to it after a month or so. heh. mine gave up, and gave me my own room real quick, we used to live in apts before we bought our house, and after the first one she always got one with an office, or extra room

I'm pretty sure you mean 1x6's. 1x4's (3 1/2") do not enough space to hold an NES game without it hanging off the end. Especially if you want the end label showing.

I found mine from Wally World about 4 years ago...love them...

All they are is the adjustable CD/DVD shelf units...perfect depth for NES...also great because you adjust the height like you need. This is three matching ones...kind of disappointed, my next one is not going to match as they don't carry them anymore...I am glad I picked up 3 kits in 5 days when I did...

^ Yes!! For looseys, no substitute for old CD shelving. It's just the right depth and height. Of course, not the plastic moulded kind with built-in ridging for Jewel cases...wooden shelving.
