Hey Jeremy, would you mind putting the end date on the sub-heading of these contests?

You do sometimes, but when you don't I really have trouble figuring out which contest is currently running. I usually view by "latest posts" which doesn't include the thread creation date.

I don't have much to say about this game. I one-lifed it like two weeks ago, so I still had everything fresh in my mind, which actually made it really pretty boring.

Anyways, here's the before picture and the after picture (featuring my favorite number!)

Knew someone would get this before me. Didn't get a chance to start until a couple hours ago. I decided to experiment with racking up score using the subweapons. And if I hadn't died on the last stage I could've rolled the score right at the start of the 2nd quest. It is possible to roll the score using just one life on the 1st quest, but everything has to cooperate and that doesn't happen that often. One time I nearly got 300000 just in the first stage alone. Unfortunately gotta give up the tv again for the day, so won't get another chance at securing a 2nd place spot until real late tonight-early tomorrow morning. On the big plus side, I found several new hidden money bag treasures that I never ever found before in all my years playing this.

Score upon 1st death 602530 (Should've played this stage out like normal, forgot that they sometimes double up those bats):
Photobucket

Score upon 1st death 718800 (damn, and I was doing really good on score too, would've most likely past 800000 by the end of this quest, then all I would've needed to do is play through a stage or two normally in the second quest):

Holy shizz Megan, you must know some serious racking strategies that I don't! You're racking up points at double the rate I was!

Kinda like you with Ninja Gaiden. I kick ass in Castlevania but hey, seems you do too, pulling off a no deather in a few quests in a row), beaten the game a hundred plus times (only other game I've beaten more is Marble Madness), and even though I've never attempted to play it like I did last night, still I know exactly how to rack up points in it. Just too bad I couldn't have gotten the game started much sooner, I started playing around 4am, stopped a little after 6am, just wasn't enough time. As is I probably won't be able to play it later tonight, gotta go out tomorrow morning, something important to do, job related. Anyway, if you don't get curious and go back and try to figure it out, once I'm able I'll definitely have a video of it so you'll be able to see how I get those points, but again, really very much like how its done in Ninja Gaiden, just gotta find the right spot and have the right subweapon, which would either be the holy water or boomerang depending on what enemies you farming points from.

Why not play on an Emulator? I never get the TV to myself for more than an hour at a time, and that's why I've been emulating lately. That, and I can play during boring lectures at Uni
As long as you have a USB gamepad or a RetroUSB NES connector,  it's pretty much exactly the same.

I'm looking forward to the video!

Because I can't play with a keyboard worth shit. No USB controller, not yet anyway. And even if I did, I only use emulator for taking pics which is mostly used for sprites and such, or for exploring games I don't have, or to check out some things in games that I do have and I just happen to be conveniently on the computer at the time so fire up the emulator. But for beating games, I prefer cart, only games I ever beat on emulator were two unreleased games Robocop vs Terminator, and Time Diver Eon Man (both really good games by the way), a PAL game that I just had to play, Ufouria (this game was great), and only one game that I own, Double Dragon III (wasn't supposed to beat it this way, just happened to while I was practicing, and without dying at that), coarse these were when I used to have a PC controller a couple years ago. I came close to beating a couple other Famicom games as well, but decided against finishing them, kinda like to keep my beaten list to just games that I own, bad enough that 5 of them I don't (with the first 3 games above plus Mario is Missing, and Peter Pan and the Pirates both of which I used to own but didn't like so got rid of).

Okay, so I got a bit of rest early in the evening yesterday, why, wasn't feeling well for one, but also, I couldn't wait til later in the day today to continue my attempt at this, wanted to hit it up as soon as possible.

Score upon 1st death 611.200 (what happened here, I screwed up on the previous screen with the red skeletons and skull cannons and took some hits while trying to rack up some score, left me with only 1 hit for the Grim Reaper battle, death was imminent):
Photobucket

Score upon 1st death 805.320 (fucking bat, I hate this enemy, my worst enemy in the entire game, most times you can walk safely by and keep on walking and jumping past them, but every once in a while all could be going well and then suddenly one of these batstards decides to alter its attack pattern to hit you with a quick swoop, but that's okay, I didn't quite like how I played it anyway):
Photobucket

Okay, now the big one! Final score upon defeating Dracula in the 1st quest 975.440 (wanted to try to get the score to roll over upon beating it, but decided not to risk it):
Photobucket
Score right before it rolled over 998.940 (had to use my recording to catch this pic):
Photobucket
Score right after it rolled over, upon clearing the 1st stage of the 2nd quest (could've had it sooner, like at the very start of entering the castle, but decided lets see about finishing up one more stage):
Photobucket
Score upon 1st death 999.990+033.490 (hadn't played the 2nd quest really in quite some time, a bit rusty on it):

Nice work, MissClawful! I'll have to check out the vid later tonight when I have some extra time.

So, who is going to roll the score next for third place?

Sorry, but took it all down, every bit of it, videos, everything, just don't feel like dealing with it anymore.

Played another game of Castlevania a little while ago, been wanting to get that score rolled over on the 1st quest (as well as finishing without dying, otherwise I wouldn't count it, double goal accomplished, again), and well, I did it, on the 5th stage before encountering Grim Reaper.

First place to rack score, stage 1, the area before the door going to the second section, fight the zombies there with holy water, timing it to hit up to 6 at once (firebombing 3 as the come at you from the right side-must be from the right side, otherwise its not going to work as well for you, then back away as three more run into the fire from the same direction, but this is only if they cooperate, sometimes they don't and some decide to attack from behind you, or the next set of 3 delay too long in following the first group. A safe time to stop and move on would be when the timer reaches 80 seconds, you can push for as low as 60 but really have to rush it to the end, and hope that the bat is aggressive so you can beat it quickly. By the time this stage ends you could have between 200000 to as high as 300000, though getting that high requires all those zombies to behave properly, I actually managed once to reach 318000, but that was a one time only deal, most of the time I struggle to make it to 260000 which is what I tried to usually push for, but this particularly game I fell I think it was around 220000 points (figured I'd see how well I could make it with a lower stage 1 score). Besides uncooperative zombies, other nuisances here are the occasional stop watch dropped (they will if you fight long enough, drop a holy water again though), don't want that, it'll slow your score racking down big time, and the cross, which does nothing for you because touching it to kill zombies or anything for that matter yields no score.

The next good spot to rack points is at the end of stage 2 before the Queen Medusa battle, this time using the boomerang to hit medusa heads. Most of the time you will be able to knock out 2 of them with one boomerang, but if your timing is perfect you can hit two in front of you, walking forward just a couple blocks before it hits that second one, if it connects you might be in good shape to hit the third, which you'll then after it connects with the second, walk back again, and as the boomerang is about to touch you, jump over it, continuing following it, and again, if your timing was perfect you should hit that third medusa head for a much bigger score. By the time you are ready to battle the queen bitch herself, the timer should be letting you know you have 30 seconds left, make sure you have at least a handful of boomerangs for her to finish her off quick enough. Problem item here, the occasional holy water will be dropped, and it won't do you a bit of good in racking score against these enemies (if you get the holy water, keep whipping the medusa heads, eventually they'll drop a boomerang for you again). Anyway, you can get at least 100000 points in this stage.

Third place, end of stage 3, defeat the skull cannon right before encountering the mummies, and now, with boomerang in hand (make sure you kept this from the previous stage), kill the medusa heads like you done in stage 2, only this time focus on hitting them first as they come from the right, following the boomerang back to the left after it connects with that second medusa head, you'll hit the third, but not only that but also the white skeleton that will reappear on the platforms all the way to the left, score will jump up very quickly in this stage if you can pull off hitting all 3 medusa heads plus this skeleton with one boomerang. You can well exceed 200000 points before having to give up and go for the boss duo, at about 40 seconds or thereabout, just to be on the safe side.

Okay, the next place, stage 4, not quite as profitable, probably can be, against fishmen, but never risked it myself, I just used my whip against hunchbacks and eagles until the timer reached about 100 seconds, didn't even get 100000 points I don't think, but no biggie, the next stage will be point heaven. I stuck with keeping the boomerang, though it didn't matter because I'd switch to holy water at the start of stage 5 anyway.

In stage 5 get the holy water, make sure you keep this (besides, its always the best weapon against Death anyway), though if you end up with the boomerang again, no big deal, both weapons work just as well with what you'll be using it on. Reach the screen right before you climb the steps up to the final hallway (the spot I'm at in the pic below). On the second level, destroy the skull cannon at the top of the stairs, walk to the right, get the attention of a red skeleton, if you already had one near you, whip it or jump over it, continue right, but do let it follow, another red skeleton will rise near the steps leading to the next screen, whip it, try to get the skeleton following you and this one to collapse at the same time, as close to each other as possible. Anyway, once you get them in sync, head back left again to where the skull cannon was, make sure the red skeletons follow you, destroy the cannon again as it does reappear, whip the skeletons, head back to the right again, now a third one will rise up from where the steps are (so long as the one on the lower level isn't on screen, can only be up to 3 on screen at once), again time it so they all move and fall in conjunction with each other. Now, whether holy water or boomerang, use either, just keep dropping them with each usage, they don't stay down very long, so you'll be able to build that score up rapidly with them. I got here with around 700000 points, rolled it over still with 100 seconds to spare. Like with the technique to get an extra hit on stage 3 with the white skeleton, you can also do that here with the skull cannon too, if using the boomerang, hit the red skeletons one way, jump the boomerang, follow it, it should hit the cannon's fireballs for some extra points, though its a bit more dangerous I think doing this way, so I stick with holy water.

As for the last stage, I don't dare try anything except making through alive, but since I already done rolled the score on the previous stage, no need to do anything but beat it.

Score right before it rolled over 999.150 (was holy firebombing 3 red skeletons here all at once, ran out, but one more flick of my whip knocked them all back down, rolled the score):
Photobucket

Safely made it to Dracula, this time made sure to grab a stop watch on the way, after what I just pulled off, wasn't about to fail and die on the way, especially if one of those big bats decided to get frisky and swoop against me, thankfully though did not, so since I had it, was able to use it to effortlessly get through the clock tower part.
Photobucket

Beat the game yet again without dying (seems the maximum lives they let you carry is 23), though nearly lost to Drac's second form (perhaps I should've went with holy water on him this time, I took a risk that nearly cost me), but slayed the master vamp, my final score 999.990+70.140 (I quit the game after that, no need for the 2nd quest, didn't feel like playing it):

Today was the first day I could sit down and play this game for more than 15 minutes and here's my score.  Not as good as the others, but good enough for third...for now

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

Wow, only 3 people posted scores for this one, I expected we'd have more, what a shame, not even any last minute entries.
