there are a few old mentions on the boards but I think this has been mostly overlooked. it took me 8 months of checking every ebay listing every day to spot one. i think it's a good candidate for the odd variants thread.

from what I gather this is the 3rd version of this game, after BK-0 and BK-1. at the very least Jordan has been removed (guard bulls #99). that's as much checking as i've done.

so who has one?

What's different about this one exactly?

According to OP, Michael Jordan has been "Mr Dream"d
That seems really bizarre to me. The game features rosters from 91-92, were they really still churning out copies of this game into late 1993?
Is Reggie Lewis also removed from the game?

Aside from this, he is also pointing out that the code on the front is NES-N7-USA compared to all the other copies being NES-BK-USA and NES-BK-USA-1 showing that this is the third release and the rosters have adjusted slightly.

here's a pic of the board. datecodes on the chips indicate september 1993, so that plus distribution time to get it on a shelf at least.

reggie lewis is on the celtics roster in this version. i did a quick scan of the rosters and jordan was the only one i could spot who was genericized.

Wow September 1993, so that means about 27 months after Magic Johnson's last game for the Lakers (not counting the unsuccessful '92 attempt) and 16 months after Larry Bird's last game for the Celtics. What a crazy outdated game to be releasing.

That's crazy. That would be like selling NBA 2K18 now with guys such as Paul Pierce and Mike Miller on rosters.

Dang it....and....awesome! Something beyond just a label variant to search for. Dig finding gameplay variants. How different are the rosters?

look at it from Tecmo standpoint - Blazers were NBA finals in 1992... maybe they figured they could run with that, and September 1993 being a few months away from the start of the 1993-1994 season, they probably pumped this game up one last time for folks.

I actually had this discussion with a buddy last year, I'm 99% sure I have one. I'm pretty sure he does as well. I'll have to dig around.

Yes, isn't Tecmo Super NBA also like this with Jordan/non-Jordan variants? They may not have two seperate model numbers though. I've been arguing this with a friend.

Isn't one of biggest reasons that Punch Out and Mike Tyson's Punch Out are considered different games is that they have different codes?

Tecmo bowl: major player switched, same title screen, same base label code, same game

Tecmo NBA: most important player removed, same title screen, different label code, same game

Punch Out: boss sprite swapped, slightly different title screen, different label code, different game?

Theres a bunch of same game - different games out there that make no sense.

contra and probotector? SAME GAME!

mario 2 & doki doki panic? DIFFERENT!

Snowboard challenge & Heavy shreddin? same game!

Mario Bros. & Mario Bros Classic series? COMPLETELY DIFFERENT GAMES!!!

Bubble Bath Babes & Mermaids of Atlantis? Different

Impossible Mission AVE & Impossible Mission SEI? Different

Myriad & Caltrain? Different!

Ninja Turtles & Hero Turtles? Same

Ninja Gaiden & Shadow Warriors? Same.

Theres zero consistency in the grouping conventions of same-game. Can’t go by seal of quality either because uh-oh, anticipation, Mario 2, and various others have no-seal variants. Can’t go by “left Nintendo’s factory” because Konami, and Acclaim made their own carts...can’t go by “Nintendo authorized it” because then you need to include NWC gold and maybe even grey.

Whole list is messed up, but it works well enough.

I also own this N7 variant, along with Hybrid it appears.  Pretty interesting that Jordan was removed.

Curious - are you a big variant collector?  Looking for this game 8 months and all?

Ive personally focused on 5 screw variants (TM, made in japan, r, mismatches, etc) and look every week for a few oddballs that never seem to appear.  Divingninja has confirmed that the two I need, in fact,  exist.

Good to see an additional person out there fighting the good fight.  Are there other codes youve been searching for?

not especially. i'll pick up the odd one here and there given the opportunity but i don't chase. this one i did look for because the rom wasn't out there afaik. i dumped it and submitted to no-intro so there's at least a record of it

I'm sure i burned through a few of these as donors when I was cranking out Earthbound Zero and Mario Adventure repros. This was the cheapest donor at the time so I probably went through 50+ of them. I didn't know of any variants so i never checked them in detail like that
