Second attempt at Tecmo went better. Getting back in touch with the controls helps. I don't play many football video games as I've often found their controls overly muddy and often have too much going on on-screen to be able to parse but the Tecmo series is an example that gets it right, I think.

Also...my new camera does not seem to like taking pictures of my monitor...

After realizing that I didn't follow the rules properly with U.N. Squadron (took a pic mid-stage rather than at the beginning), I decided to go back for a second attempt and I got WAY farther than I expected. I even managed to make it to the boss of the "cave" stage for the first time ever and started off pretty well but ended up getting stomped. 25 years of playing this game and have yet to get past that stage.

This was my first attempt. A little background--I have played in the last 11 Tecmo Madison tournaments, which are recognized as the world championships of TSB for the NES. I haven't advanced a round in like 5 years in that tournament, but the skills in that game transferred way more than I thought they would to this version of the game. I didn't think I'd do so much damage in my first run, so I did not bother to change Seattle's playbook actually. If I did, I think 100 points is feasible.
  • Tips for beating my score:
  • Kickoff deep as opposed to going for onside kicks. In the NES version kickoffs suck 18 seconds off the clock before any returns, but in this game, there are touchbacks and no time will drain. This took me awhile to learn and I gave my opponent lots of good field position early on in the game by kicking onsides.
  • Have a team with a fast outside linebacker...for me it was Charles Haley on the Cowboys. Even if you don't set-up your opponents playbook with lots of terrible pass plays, you should rush the passer every play to cause erratic passes that your drones can intercept.
  • Check your condition of your players every quarter.
I kind of hope someone beats my score. I feel like a dick making my first post and whooping this game like this right away.

Hmm, I won't be able to fire my SNES up for several days. I'd say it should probably be forbidden if it lets you put up 4 plays that all are basically the same for run or pass

I played another game. Won 73-0. Then I played another game, ahead 63-0 going into the fourth and only scored one more TD.

Oh, and I tried playing UN Squadron. I don't know if it's the tiny bit of lag, or that I just can't get into it, but I sucked it up. Might have to hook it up to my other CRT and try again.

Just curious, but how did you hear about this contest?

I know absolute jack and squat about TSB(and football in general), but being able to manipulate your opponents playbook sounds cheaty as hell.

Brock,

I've been lurking on the boards for like half a year. I'm fooling around with collecting all Wii U games as a bonding experience with my son. This contest motivated me to post though and perhaps find some other Tecmo enthusiasts.

I'm giving UN Squadron another try, and hitting every possible convoy I can. My home life is hectic as hell this week(kid's bday, multiple D&D campaigns, band auditioning new members, visiting parents, etc), so I'm stuck trying it at work, using a keyboard as a controller.

EDIT: Ugh, two runs ruined by dumb deaths at the Seavet sub and the cave(ceiling boss). That thing is so hit and miss, sometimes I can ace it, other times I lose my entire run there.

EDIT 2: New Score! 1,347,100. That's it. No more grinding convoys. If someone jumps in an beats my score, my hat's off to them.

Never did get the hang of UN Squadron, but I did post up a score finally.

Guess I should of at least booted up the games for some pity points. Couldn't really be bothered though as I don't really enjoy either game too much and didn't have a ton of extra time this month. Seems a little cheap to me just to post a score even though you're not really competing. Lots of good games on the horizon though... I'll definitely be taking part in both games in July. August will be another busy month for me though.
