Can I get clarification on the winning condition for two games:

1) Cyberball - can you win the game in Rookie level for a "real" win?
2) Silent Service - in the war patrol scenarios, you can head right back to a base and the scenario will end. Is this cheating? Technically, you have finished the patrol scenario.

Congrats. I'm already thinking about doing the games I usually beat on every New Year (Die Hard, Spelunker and Cliffhanger). Gonna have to emulate them this time though as I'll be on a vacation.
I might even try and beat a few more games later on as the year goes on as I usually do.

to me the fun is really discovering and sometimes suffering through games that i otherwise wouldn't have played if it didn't help out the thread. so this year i didn't complete any games that i had done last year, and now that the different sets have been completed we're not really doing anything new if the same people beat the same games every year, anyway well done everyone and thanks scary can't wait to see the different stats

Well, a whole lot of games will be available for people to explore and suffer through next year. I will be taking 2017 off from the thread to focus on finish breaking games like Paperboy, Ikari Warriors, Lunar Pool and Mighty Bomb Jack instead.
And I can't wait to see this year's stats. It will be pretty interesting.

Since we(mostly you guys) knocked this one out in 2016, maybe we as a group should lend some help to the other beat all threads. I've been meaning to sit down and knock out some N64 games this year and never got around to it, so maybe I'll give it a more serious go in 2017.

I put some effort on the SNES thread the last few months, and will probably help more with it next year, but I mostly suck at SNES games, sadly.
Still, I think I can push to beat some 50 or so games there for next year.
And I barely played N64 during my teenage years, so I have little interest in it.

The only SNES games I have any interest in, are the ones that always get beaten early.

I'd argue for yes.
Cyberball only offers single games.
"Advanced" mode lets you choose an opposing cpu team with a labeled difficulty level. I've seen it stated that the one cpu on "Rookie" is easier than the "Easy" team, but I can't really tell a difference.
The score screen "ending" is the same either way.
Unless someone wanted to argue that you're missing game content by not playing with the larger playbook in "Advanced," I can't really see why the mode/settings would make a difference for the victory condition.

If everyone took that attitude, none of these projects would ever get past 30%! We all play (and beat) games we don't like or particularly enjoy, to help out and "take one for the team".

Unfortunately we have probably hit the ceiling for what we can do in a year in my thread, because I sure as hell am not doing 150 games ever again, or anything close to that.  For that reason the goal of the SNES thread will be changing next year to make it more manageable, and to try and draw in some of these reluctant NES guys

Also something to consider is doing one of these: http://nintendoage.com/forum/mess...

No reason not to save the strategies Daniel has for the Koei games, Bea's thoughts on Mutant Virus, tables' strategies for To The Earth, etc.

But my strategy for Mutant Virus so far has been drink lots of alcohol till inhibitions are a thing from the past...
So I will take time off next year to figure out how to beat it sober and put it on paper. Same with Lunar Pool and a few other games I do enjoy that are fairly easy to beat.

I played Mutant Virus on my phone for a few minutes to see what it's like. At first I was just like 'What the hell is going on' Got the virus covered in blue in the first room. Went on my way. Then I saw more and I actually destroyed the next batch I saw and it clicked. Went back to the first room and wiped it out there. It's kinda cool.

Huh... looks like I will have to complete at least a game next year so I stay on that list of people who have beaten games every year since 2012.

I loved Ultimate Air Combat. I beat it last year for myself. Its pretty long tho.  I also did pretty good for someone that just started 2 years ago.  I got more games this year but ive been concentrating on gameboy.  I have a larger list of games I own so I cant be going feverishly into it again but much more casual.

I've been thinking about what this thread should look like for next year. So far, we've done the following:

2012 - licensed (successful)
2013 - licensed + unlicensed (unsuccessful)
2014 - licensed + unlicensed (unsuccessful)
2015 - licensed + pal exclusives (successful)
2016 - licensed + unlicensed + pal exclusives (successful)

After two years of failing the unlicensed games, they were replaced with the PAL games for a change of pace. Then after 2015 went well, they were added back in to see if we could finally clear them - we ended up doing everything. Where to go from here? There isn't really a bigger goal we can have for next year, so instead I think we should do something different. For 2017, I'd like to do licensed + a selection of good/interesting Famicom games.

Why do this? Several reasons. First, one of fun things about these threads is finding new games. I know I've played many games I wouldn't have otherwise due to these competitions. Second, I think it's unlikely we would beat all unlicensed games again. The motivation to complete it for the first time is gone, and several people have already suggested that they won't beat certain games again. Third, I think it would be good to have a slightly easier goal so that NA can do better on the SNES thread.

I'm planning to pick 73 Famicom games (677+73 = an even 750). I won't pick rpgs that require Japanese knowledge, anything from the FDS, or any crappy Mahjong games. There's a ton of exclusives that were Japan only (over 600), so there's plenty of good games to choose from. Of course, I'll probably throw in a few bad ones too for fun.

That sounds good to me. I would be interested in trying a few different Famicom games that I never played before. Would be a nice chance of pace, specially given that I have other focus for 2017 and won't be playing NES as much.
Not much point in doing the unlicensed set again, specially because most of us don't want to suffer through action 52 again.

Setting PAL games aside for 2017 is also a good idea. I have beaten all of them this year (even the two that Guitarzombie beat before me) and have no intent in doing so again in 2017.

Maybe throw a crappy Mahjong game or two just for fun. I actually enjoy mahjong
