Whenever someone makes a list of ANYTHING about videogaming, there is a dispute...so in NO PARTICULAR ORDER...here is my vote for the 5 hardest games of the nes

~Circus Caper (Holy SHIT!...STOP THROWING THINGS AT ME!!!)

~Battletoads (has anyone out there ever acutally beaten this game?)

~Cheetahmen II (Pay $150 for an ass stomping)

~Ghouls and Goblins (...)

~GIVE ME YOUR ANSWER FOR #5!!! (my vote is Friday the 13th...without the correct  starting locations secret)

I LOVE all of these games, I recommend everyone try to beat these games to test their true nes mastery!!

Its funny, Alot of people say Batman but I can usually breeze through it. Turtles is pretty hard, i have gotten to the very end and lost.
So my votes go to Battletoads and Festers Quest.

^^^ My understanding is that Cheetahmen II is only "beatable" by using some kind of glitch.

My votes:

Ghosts and Goblins

Friday the 13th (by the 3rd day it does get REALLY hard)

The Uninvited (to be fair, I've only spent a few hours at it, but it has WAY more items than Shadowgate)

Battletoads

Castlequest

To be fair, The Uninvited and Castlequest would be pretty trivial with a thorough walkthrough, but as far as figuring them out yourself, I think they rank as pretty tough.

Batman is pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Only the "Dance with the Devil" level ever gives me any problems.

Festers Quest just requires patience (similar to Blaster Master).  Once you crank up the juice on his cannon it's easy pickings.

Turtles is definitely tough, though.   I can't consistently get past the 3rd level because of that stupid jump in the sewer.  I might make it 1 out of 20 times, or something ridiculous like that.

Ninja Gaiden II is up there for me. Might be better with a save feature.

Agree with you on Festers Quest.  I actually beat this game, though it took a lot of patience (and yes, similiar but definitely inferior game to Blaster Master, even had a lot of the same sound effects).

I know I'm leaving out a few, but my list (no particular order)

-  Ghosts and Goblins  (simply one of the hardest games overall for nes)

-  Battletoads (darn speeder bike level)

-  Castlequest (also agree here, tried to beat this, and even with patience I got stuck)

-  TMNT (bad controls, hated the water bomb defuse level)

-  various AVGN games :  Karate Kid, Friday 13th, Silver Surfer

A few titles I find difficult:

Battle of Olympus - Without any walk-through, this game will drive you to tears.
TMNT - Yeah.. ridiculous
Guardian Legend - Only way I beat this one was with the "J" code.
Rush N' Attack - This one gives me nightmares, the Russians never stop attacking!

Correct me if im wrong, but if i remember correctly there is a programming error in the game.

And you can only play untill you encounter the ape man.

You can't go furter then that, somebody with knowledge took the rom apart and played the other levels also?

Rush 'n attack isn't that hard to beat.
There are some games I totally suck at but I love them nonetheless. Games such as gradius, life force, parodius. Probably the only way to beat these games is not dying which is not really possible for me at this point

same here, but my friend and i mastered that game when we were younger

i always put the code in just to do it but i always finished the game with like 38-40 men

1. TMNT
2. Festers Quest
3. Super C (i've never beat this one for some reason )
4. Bayou Billy (i just never got into it enuff to beat it)

i think those are pretty difficult to beat.

i haven't played some of the games ya'll mentioned so i'm not sure about those.

^^^ I'll agree that Bayou Billy is pretty tough. It plays kind of like Double Dragon, but avoiding damage is EXTREMELY difficult.

I'm not sure why so many people think the Guardian Legend is hard. It's a fun enough game, that you should be willing to play it enough to get good at it. I find it very beatable.

And I hope the Mother Brain is kidding about Kid Icarus...then again I had A LOT of practice with the gameboy version before I ever played the game on the NES, so I might be biased.

From the games that I've played:
Battletoads
TMNT
Cobra Triangle
Bayou Billy

About some of the games people have mentioned... Kid Icarus, Contra, and Super C don't seem to be bad at all. Those are all fun games, and all they take is a little time to get good at.

I loved Uninvited. It was like Shadowgate part 2 to me, whereas Deja Vu was not, and that's why I didn't care for Deja Vu. Unfortunately, Shadowgate was ruined for me when I read too much in Nintendo Power, but I kept away from any spoilers for Uninvited.

Man, you guys are a bunch of wussies! 99% of the titles listed in this thread so far aren't even that difficult (after a little bit of practice, of course). You want a hard NES game? Try beating Overlord.

My mantra, as worded by SamSpade on 06/12/12:
I don't resell to fund my collection, I don't treat this hobby like a second job, I don't care if my collection is worth ten bucks or ten thousand because I never plan on selling it. Seriously, what does the value have to do with anything if you never plan on selling? Speculation doesn't mean jack shit to me at this point, I just want to play my nes games...

1. Ikari Warriors (without ABBA)
2. Battletoads
3. Cobra Triangle (the last waterfalls before the last boss are very difficult)

I don't think The Guardian Legend or Rush 'n Attack were that difficult, though it took me a half day to complete them. Battletoads and Cobra Triangle I have been playing a lot but still haven't beaten. :/

I beat it on maybe my 5th serious attempt.  Once you know what to do (ignoring the "light the fireplaces" advice, for starters) and where to go, it's not that tough.  About the only thing I had trouble with was the second mom fight and the 3rd Jason fight because your dodging has to be PERFECT or he'll cut you up.  When I beat it, I had lost all counsellors but one (Mark, of course), but not a single child, which was my personal goal: to protect all 15 children.
