I used to love renting this game as a kid. I remember the first time a collector told me that they thought this was a bad game, my heart sank.

I still remember a moment from an NES TV show where viewers could write in and try and stump the host. The question one day was "Name 3 things that are red in Paperboy?" The host got it right by answering "The houses, the hats, and.........the newspapers". Get it, because papers are read.

For some games, you don't get to see your score after you get a Game Over or it's difficult to capture the score after a Game Over.  This is one of those games where if you don't score enough points to see the High Scores screen, you don't get to see your final score.  Plus, sometimes I like to mix up the rules a little bit to add an extra challenge to the games.

Well my thumb is very sore now. Played all yesterday and this morning trying for an awesome run. Finally got it but I still feel like I missed some stuff. 170k or more seems like a real possibility.
Upped it slightly again
Another run. Upped it again! Wiped out on the bonus level in Saturday where the ramp is. I can taste 170k. So close.

EDIT:  Updated score below.

I haven't played this game in earnest since I was a kid ... in fact I think I've only beaten it once or twice before today.

Interestingly the game doesn't really reward "clean play"... For practice I spoofed a "perfect" delivery game (you end up with 4 red houses left on Sunday)

There are paper-stacks galore, but you can't smash windows other than on 4 houses, and only 10 of the houses have mailboxes (so converted red houses are only worth 300 pts for door delivery instead of 300*X for how many windows you can blow out)

But the game doesn't give you any kind of end-game bonus for how many subscribers you kept, so all of those converted red houses just weigh on you, round after round...

I did end up with 109k, though, from that game, so nailing all 10 mailboxes every time (for 7500 pts per day) is valuable, of course...

Yeah,I thought it strange that there is no reward for trying to keep subscribers other than the 750 points for putting a paper in their mailbox. It's like the game actually wants you to knock out windows and in general be a terrible paperboy.

So I think I have figured out how to get into the 140k range... any thoughts on a practical maximum?

Finally will get to play this again tonight but I wonder if less subscribers would earn a higher score since you get points for breakage of non-subscriber houses and many houses have lots of windows for 300 per.

That is part of it...

But Houses with mailboxes you generally want to keep because the are worth 2.5x per paper what other scoring methods are worth.

I absolutely despise the skateboarder. 9/10 times when I crash it's because of him. I've had countless great runs ended due to that pos.

So to preface, I DID NOT score this high, but based on how well I did earlier and what I know I missed I am certain that 150k is possible, and with higher precision play it should be possible to break 160k...

I think the twingalaxies record was 250k, so there's definitely a twist somewhere.

I can consistently get in the 140's, and can easily imagine how 160 is possible with better aim... but 250 sounds ludicrous. (unless the rules let you use all of your lives, then for sure, it is worth killing yourself and unloading on certain houses by converting each life into 3,000 pts, basically...but that still doesn't get you close to 250k)

Speaking of...

142,950 (going out of town for the weekend, so this will be my one-and-only update)

Try as I might, I couldn't get things to come together to get into the 150's, even though I could definitely see room for improvement...
