Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  I have a poem for you all this week, so I hope you will all enjoy it:

Alas, it is the start of a new week,
So for the new contest, I shall give you a sneak peek.
It is a puzzle game with pieces blue, green, red, and gray
And you need to make them all go away.
As you play, time will be ticking down.
And if you're good enough, you may win this week's scoring crown.
If you run out of time on the clock
There's no need to get mad and throw a rock.
Just toss the controller on the floor of your den,
And then pick it up and start over again.
The idea is to get a very high score,
Which will make you want to play this game even more.
This game is loads and loads of fun,
Which means this week you probably won't get out and see much sun.
So, let us make haste
For we have no more time to waste.
It's time for your old pal Bimmnic
To introduce you to Puzznic.

.....Why do I hear crickets chirping?  I guess it's time for me to cue the rules:

  • Play Puzznic Mode
  • Play until Game Over
  • You must start the game at level 1-1
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Puzzle

The contest ends Sunday, 8/17/14 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

I really like this game. I picked it up at a flea market a few weeks ago mainly because I saw it was part of the 2nd half contest and it drew me in. I'm not particularly great at puzzle games either, but I'll be giving this one some effort for sure.

Going to give Legendary Wings a couple more gos until I finally try out Puzznic.
Owned this game for a while now, but never tried it.
Heard tons of great things though, so maybe it'll be fun?

I was trying out Qix by myself after seeing some of the scores that were posted.
arch's score made me turn off my TV after about 4 minutes - and I did not post a score.

Your Legendary Wings score Balloon is really, really tough to beat.

This.

A puzzle/platformer?

I am going to get my ass kicked up and down ths week.
This game is hard as balls and does not forgive the slightest error.

The music makes me think of a smart-ass clown juggling middle fingers as you are executed.

Anyone who reads bimmy's intro should do so in the voice of that puppet thing from The movie Saw.
Very fitting for this week.

And the fast music when time is running out doesn't help you mess up or anything....not. at. all. What sucks is that on many stages one false move ends your run...unless using your retries is allowed. Any word on that?

There's only 2 retries, right?

Playing with the retries is okay, you can try to use them to boost your score or give you more chances to get fucked. Is there anyway to get the retries back, like beating a full set of stages (ie. 1-10 to 2-1)?

Yes, you are allowed to use your retries. Once you cannot retry anymore, you are given the option to continue. Take your picture after you lose your last life (no more retries left) before the continue counter counts down to zero. Be ready to take your picture, though, as it counts down kind of fast.

One on you puzzle masters feel free to demolish my score. I cratered on 2-6. Not a bad game at all. My only gripe about it is I wish the difficulty of the levels was at least somewhat progressive. I've only played up to around 4-1 with continues and most of the levels aren't bad,but a few like 2-6 and 3-2 are complete pain.

I'm glad you guys like the poem.
I wrote it in 10 minutes yesterday at home.
I call it "Ode to Puzznic."
But alas, I did not write one for Gravnic.
You see, it is not the game of the week,
Even though its gameplay is pretty unique.
You can move the pieces across the screen in each direction
And if you do it right, you beat the stage and achieve perfection.
But now it is time to get back to our feature.
So I will take a moment to be the Puzznic teacher.
For stage 3-2, I would like to give you all some advice
So hopefully you won't have to solve the puzzle twice.
Clearing out the greens requires precision of time,
And you must do it when the moving block falls from its climb.
If you time your movement just right,
You will clear out the greens and it will be a delight.
I will let you figure out the rest yourself,
So please don't put the game back on the shelf.
I hope this will be a helpful clue
So that a winner will be you!
Even with the hint, stage 3-2 is still no picnic.
And with that, I hope you are all having fun playing Puzznic.

What's frustrating is even once you figure out what to do,you still have to have precise timing on that level or it's an instant retry.

I played the first 6 or 7 levels last night, and they didn't seem too tough, so I guess the difficulty ramps up quickly? I am good at very few puzzle games, so hopefully this is one I am good at somehow.

I had a moment yesterday where I thought it seemed like the different blocks had slightly different gravity...

Fortunately it's not the case.

It's more like there is a scattershot of tough ones to figure out and levels that you simply are fighting the clock.

I played some yesterday an made it through to level 3-6 or 3-7. There definitely is a scattershot of tougher and easier levels, as arch said. It is just a game of trial and error for the most part, and it definitely took a lot of trial to get by 3-2.

To me, the trickiest thing is needing to memorize the handful of levels where you are extremely pressed for time so that you can ID them quickly and get to work.
