For single player it probably could be done with a very complex SMB hack. For split screen you would need a very very complex hack that would add two players and vertical screen split with MMC5, a new game probably would be way easier to make that this. In any case it is a really big thing, so chances that anyone ever attempt to do something like this are really low.
