Oh man, that looks like a cool project!  As you're hacking the game, will you write down what you've managed to decipher from the game's code?

If I could have Pokemon Yellow on a Yellow cart, my head may explode.

Also, I was thinking that FF7 could be hacked to use MMC5 instead of this proprietary board, only because MMC5 is actually large enough to hold this game.
FF7 is 2MB game, MMC5 can be too...but only 1MB for PRG ROM. FF7 mapper use CHR RAM, unsuported by MMC5-MMC5 can't handle that. Well, not if the game is not hacked to use CHR ROM instead of CHR RAM.

I think if someone does a release it needs to be a mass one, these limited release shenanigans are just asinine to create false trumped up value on a bootleg of all things and not even a legitimate retail release. FF7 has a heap of fanboys and should get a proper release if it is done.

We need to ask the fellow who runs Timewalk if he could do this. They have the best CiB repros I've ever seen. They would be perfect for this.

How about a 2 in 1 with FF7 & Pokemon Yellow?! Largest NES cart ever...

mastrtonberry, unfortunately it's a little more complicated than most repros. It uses a weird mapper not found in US carts, so that has to be reproduced. Some work will have to be done by an engineer.

It's too bad INL doesn't have time, his current work proves he could definitely do it.

Yeah Timewalk could get it done. They've had unique boards for the SNES developed, if they spent the money + time they could get the right board that'd make the Final Fantasy 7 doable on a cart.

Plus they'd have a very cool manual, box and probably poster with their release, which is always appreciated.

-------------------------
To-do manuals: Arabian Knights, Gulliver Boy, Dark Law, Brandish 2, Flying Hero
Finished manuals: Neugier, Wonder Project J, Burning Heroes, Star Ocean, FEDA, Monstania, Chaos Seed

IIRC, Timewalk doesn't develop their own boards; they're from Infinite NES Lives, and as someone pointed out earlier, he's busy with other board developments.

In either case, this will be the very first time I'll play FF7. It's going to be surreal as hell.

What if you got ahold of a bunch of copies of the original cart? Couldnt you just reuse the old board?

Actually, I played about an hour or so of this, and while it is fantastic and fun, there is still a lo tof work I would think before I would put the effort into making a real cart.

Im not really good at hacking roms, so dont know how much work this would involve, but a few things, was we had goblins and such in the shinra reactor, instead of shinra guards, and I could definitely see balance issues later as well. There was one fight with like 5 enemies versus just cloud in the beginning, which was pretty much a losing situation if you didnt run.

FF7 was never particularly difficult, but I think this may be just a bit to much on the "grindy" side. Other than that, I was actually really impressed so far.

Not that it isnt good, but wouldnt we want to make it really perfect before someone put the investment into a cart release?

Awesome stuff! I take it the graphical "J" artifacts are due to some sort of vertical overscan/resolution problem?

Well I'm in PAL zone and the patched rom has those glitches even using an emulator (set in PAL mode).

I assume that in NTSC NES or Famicom console it will work ok.

Ha ha, nice.

I may actually end up buying a few from him in all honesty. I can't justify the cost of an original cart(s).

To be fair if he made the games clearly labeled as a bootleg people shouldn't be too pissed off. Maybe a different color cart, the label having a tasetful, non-distracting notice somewhere on it, or even patching the roms, so a quick warning screen comes up, alearting whoever owns the game it's a bootleg and that if they paid full price, they paid too much.

Good job!  I want to know, what kind of chip burner did you have to use?

Oh, and those lines of letters at the top of the screen will be on pretty much all maps.  I didn't realize that the screens for Pal games were a little larger than the US/Japanese versions until very late into the hack.

Thanks, I've played a few minutes with no problems.

Now, I don't know why but the game isn't running... I have to check it again.

I have a Xeltek SUPERPRO 500P programmer that supports all chips in the market.

Great job!

What game did you use? Also, was it simply removing the old ROM and replacing it with the new ROM and what chip did you use? Would love to make this one day if I can get my hands on a compatible Ninjang cart!

I'm also curious how you did it.  I've got a copy of the Famicom bootleg FF7.
