This is the correct answer. You have to be delusional to think that only games from your youth are classics.

Looking at the user base on NA, it seems like 50% care more about nostalgia than about video games as a whole. Otherwise, how could you not keep up with the great modern stuff?

Games that are enjoyed by millions upon millions of school aged children, and have a cultural impact today are next generations "untouchables"

My four year old son never even played fortnite and despite that he flosses and calls it the fortnite Dance....that's gonna leave a mark in the future.
It genuinely pains me that kids that young even know what Fortnite is.

I heard from some other parents about their 5 year olds coming home from kindergarten talking about Fortnite.

Who is letting 5 year olds play that kind of game in the first place?

What kind of game is Fortnite to you though? It's a cartoony shooter no worst than Splatoon, or Yoshi's Safari.

Call me old fashioned, but the game is a shooter where you kill the other human-appearing players.  I don't think that is remotely appropriate for 5 year olds.

EDIT:  and I think there is a pretty clear difference between Splatoon (truly "cartoon characters" shooting blobs of paint from silly looking weapons) and Fortnite (much more human proportioned characters "killing each other" with a set of generally more realistic guns)

Though I don't know that I'd consider Splatoon entirely appropriate for a 5 year old, either.

C'mon man, no way you honestly feel that way when we grew up with cartoony violence like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Simpsons Arcade, Street Fighter, Rampage, Battletoads, Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, Bionic Commando, Metroid, and Double Dragon.

Again, Fortnite is no worst than Splatoon.

I was definitely not 5 years old when I played those games.

You don't think there is a difference between an 8 year old playing Ninja Gaiden and a 5 year old playing Ninja Gaiden?  Really?

And Fortnite is definitely "worse" than Splatoon if you want to split hairs on age appropriateness for 5 year olds.
(shooting people with "realistic" guns versus shooting people with big goofy paint balls)

Fortnite is a clone of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds which as a shooting game has a lot more in common with Battlefield than Splatoon or Yoshi's Safari. Fortnite has you shooting other players directly, with actual guns. Splatoon is a turf war game about covering more ground in paint than the opposing team, you don't really shoot anyone directly there. Yoshi's Safari is more akin to Duck Hunt where you shoot animals or monsters in a very cartoony setting, moreso than Fortnite.

Are you really going by "cartoony shooter" as the only reason a game like fortnite is ok for little kids? Do you think it's ok for 5 year olds to watch TV shows like Family Guy, South Park or Rick and Morty? They're cartoony comedy shows after all, no different from shows on Cartoon Network.

If anything it's teaching them to spill paint everywhere.

I guess my feelings on the matter really are just that different since I really did have access to that kid of content as a kid.

I honestly see no problem in letting kids play video games and I’m clearly not along in that since dozens of millions of other same aged kids have access to it and actively play it.

If i were to play Ninja Gaiden with my son in the room he wouldn’t know what to do with it sure, but I have no qualms with him watching me play and cheer me on to “beat up the bad buys”

Isn't it unfair to say games like Shovel Knight will be considered classic when it's made like an 8/16 bit game to begin with?

No, because gameplay is what makes games classic, not whether it's 2d or 3d. Shovel Knight is great, but there are plenty of terrible 2d retro-style games being made every year.

No.  Not at all.

No offense, but this thread is pretty much pointless. The answer is a resounding yes, and almost undebatable. A better discussion would be, which modern games will be considered classics down the road. It's really not a question of if. It's more of a question of when, and which ones.

Classics are the best games, the most popular games, or games that defined a time period, usually having 2 or 3 of these components. I could see shovel Knight as a classic, especially if they make a 2nd one. It's a really good game on almost every system.
