Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests.  This week's game will take us to the cold battlefield, where men are born and innocence is lost.  The enemy opposition will be fierce as you venture out on your main mission: rescue hostages.  That's right grunts, you are going to have to go deep into enemy territory to rescue the hostages and get them to the extraction point where a helicopter will fly them to safety.  You will likely face lots of enemy firepower from soldiers, tanks, automated turrets, battleships, helicopters, you name it.  But General Bimmy you say, is there anything to aid me in this daunting task?  The only weapons I have at my disposal are a machine gun and jeep.  You will have to procure other weapons on the battlefield.  Okay grunts, now get out there and initiate Operation: Jackal.  This battle will make your blood boil!  Here are the rules:

  • Play until Life 0.  You may not play any of the game on Life 0.  You must immediately pause the game and take your picture once you reach Life 0
  • One playthrough only.  No looping of the game will be allowed
  • If you beat the game, take your picture once the game starts over.  You must take your picture from the starting point in the game and cannot play any of the second playthrough
  • Highest score wins
  • Special Bonus: If you beat the game, add 1,000 points to your score for each extra life you have

The contest ends Sunday, 4/27/14 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

Looking forward to this challenge. I've never put too much time into this game, but do enjoy it a lot. I may have 1cc'd in the past, but that was over 5 years ago.

I've only played this game for a few minutes to test it out when I bought it. I'm excited to see what I can do this week!

This is a really cool game!  It is like a sup'd up version of Tiger Heli with a jeep and 4-way scrolling.

Glad you like it as well. And I love the music even though the stage music is recycled after stage 3.

Never really played this game before and now that I'm playing it I have no idea why. Would be posting up a score if not for the fact that I keep playing on life 0 without realizing it. I did manage to catch myself on life 0 with the flashing jeep but I already killed some stuff on life 0 so back to square 1.

So far I have 2 problem area's, the second stage boss(es) for some reason just wont die with my fully upgraded launcher but die easily when I get killed and go after them with the grenade launcher. The second are is the third stage twin bridges where the submarines pop up and ace me 3 - 4 times before I can cross.

With missiles it seems like you need to be right up against the rock wall for hits to register against the boss.

You can't kill bosses with the "shrapnel" from your missile upgrades, but you can kill everything else that way. Bosses have to be killed with direct hits from missiles or grenades.

For that second boss, get into a position to where only two heads are on screen, square up and get as close as you can to the heads and start blasting. Your missile shrapnel will almost always take out any missiles the two heads shoot. Once one head is destroyed, move to the next and repeat the same tactic. You'll need to destroy an occasional tank that appears, but it's not difficult.

Oh,and watch out on stage 5. There is one house that is a trap as when you blow it up instead of a person coming out,you get a tank with guns blazing.

^^^ Just for pacing/FYI, you should be able to get between 27k and 30k by the time you reach that first boss.

That'll put you around roughly 60k after the boss and hostage rescue tally.

When I'm able to play again I need to do stage by stage pacing. On my post I saved every possible hostage, which isn't too dificult until the last stage when a helicopter periodically flies by spraying bullets everywhere while you are trying to offload your rescued hostages. Doesn't help that there's not a ton of room to work with either.

Yeah, although if I remember correctly they are worth 2k,which makes them doubly attractive to kill on top of being highly annoying.

I always seem to be bound up in terrain and unable to maneuver when they show up.  Highly irritating.

EDIT: can't seem to get a feel for the hit detection on the final boss, either... :/

On the final boss what I do is attack and move using somewhat of a "U" pattern. You can destroy the smaller gun but I don't bother as the bullets aren't overtly difficult to avoid. I wouldn't recommend keeping your distance but rather get as close as possible. I've found it easier to avoid both turret shots using that method of attack.

My question is what part of it actually gets damaged?  I can't seem to tell at all if the boss is taking damage?

I just listen for the sound effect of damage. Like the sound when those four heads on the second boss take a direct hit.....or any of the bosses for that matter. I think that tank takes 30 hits to kill. As you damage it,it will change color. I think it goes from a yellowish to orange to red.

I thought I still had this one, but I must have sold it when I was thinning out my NES games. I remember having finished it, but I never really played it that many times. Solid choice for the contests though, a very underrated game.
