This is the reason I stopped placing bids early and would just bid in the last seconds. Could be shady, or just someone bidding
incrementally to "win".

If this was more money, I'd definitely contact eBay and if this guy is cheating bidders, he needs to be caught. But, it was $18 shipped. I'm just going to let it pass. :/

you should call ebay anyway. You don't have to demand anything, but you should make them aware of the situation in case he's doing that to others.

This is what I do, but in cases where an auction ends late at night/early in the morning and I don't care to win THAT much, I'll throw out a max bid and let it ride.  Also, others have mentioned using a sniping service.  I use to use these waaaaaaay back in the day when I started out using eBay, but for security reasons I avoid these today.  Of course, I've not looked into how sniping tools work today, so if they are properly using an eBay API, then it might be say.  However, if I have to give them my user ID and password, it's a hard pass.  I'll just stay up and be sure I'm available when something ends if I really want it.

Majority of the time you get out bidden it's a shill bid, eBay is gonna do nothing. Accept it an move on. Shit I placed a bid on something on eBay from a member here and I’m sure they shill bid themselves

nothing you can do. ebay has lots of that.. get a buddy to bid up something instead of having a reserve price (which normally kills your sale potential)

I find the only way to do good on ebay is watch the item then 24 hours prior STOP WATCHING take it off your ebay and set an alarm. then bid with 5 seconds left. I've had lots of people annoyed because they planned to screw me and even some people refund me and say the item was lost or damaged because they didn't get what they wanted for it. Lots of assholes out there. But this tactic is the best of a bad situation.

I love when something sells for a stupid amount then gets relisted a few days later... just junk ass human beings, nothing you can do about it..

Nothing you can do

This is why you snipe. People saying just put your max and walk away. Well here is your evidence against it.

The worst is when people bid max then retract then rebid.less than you. Clear as day what they sre doing there. If someone cancels a bid they shoildnt be allowed to rebid. They may have foxed that by now. I dont bid on stuff much anymore. If they have then theyll probably just then use a second account.
