Something I came across and bought.  I present you Mario kart 64 ,  Cib.  Box inserts receipt when it was purchased 2/12/1997 Mario kart in North America was released 2/10/1997. $69.99 plus tax It was purchased 2 days after release ,  But what makes this Mario kart 64. Sooooooooooooo.  Special?  Nintendo power volume 94!  There was a contest. Form was inside the magazine to submit your best time for a reward!  1000 first place winners received gold n64 remotes"not Nintendo power 100 just plain gold" .  5000 2 second place winners would receive a 5 minute calling card as the one shown in picture.  That' calling card is 1 of 5000 that Nintendo power sent out as a prize , ... I personally collecting n64 never seen this.  How about you?  Cool piece of Nintendo history

Pretty neat, I don't think I have seen that Calling Card before, haven't actively looked. There have definitely been talks about the Gold Controller though, but ultimately it would have no premium over a regular Gold controller unless you had paperwork to prove authenticity.

As far as the Calling Card though, that is easily distinguished as specific to this contest. Nice grab, 5,000 is a large enough print run that more of these should turn up if actively hunted.

Or maybe they threw it in the garbage after Getting disconnected for insufficient minutes while trying to order Chinese ... Lol.

All jokes aside this is definitely a cool piece for a n64 collection

a friend of mine said he won that gold remote. But he lost his paper work I believe him

Yeah unfortunately with no way to prove it, it doesn't have any value premium to collectors.

The rarest North American controller known is the e3 controller.  I believe there are 12 or 13 confirmed owners with an estimated print run of under 200 due to how they were given out.  You can see a picture of mine below:

Quick question jones. Did they give out paper work for that e3 when it was handed out ? Also weren't a lot of these faked ? I read there was big drama with that.    With out paper work on a e3 I would never take a risk on some thing easy to duplicate

No paperwork, but the fakes are easily identifiable with a trained eye.  The fake logos look blocky with extremely poor centering and uneven lines, and a duller finish instead of the shiny sparkle to the real ones.  There's a running list of owners on N64forever (much less active board, but dedicated to N64) if you ever care to do some research.

It would be interesting to see exactly what they did to make their gold controller different.
They may have repainted a different coloured one or repainted a gold one a slightly different gold, both should be distinguishable from regular gold controllers.
That's if they did anything but unbox it of course lol.

I remember reading before Mario Kart 64 was released that the game was going to come bundled with a controller that was half one color and half another color. I wonder why they decided not to do it for the US considering it was the first major 4 player game.

Maybe they ran out of 2 toned remote that would have been a cool box for a us collection

There was a big youtube fiasco over the faked n64 e3 controllers.

Number 1543, glad to have it.  Serial numbering gives them a lot more collectible value IMO.

This is the first time I heard about this particular Mario Kart contest, though not too surprising I guess, since I know of one for Mario Kart Double Dash:
