Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  This week’s game is going to be Pin Bot.  Here are the rules:

  • 1 player only
  • Play until Game Over
  • If you achieve a high score, take your picture on the name entry screen
  • Highest score wins
  • GENRE: Arcade

The contest ends Sunday, 5/3/15 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written or typed on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

RANDOM PRIZE DRAWING

If we get 25 or more participants, the prize will be Super Wario Bros 3, a Mario 3 hack.
If we get less than 25 participants, the prize will be Adventures of Lolo.

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

I don't have Rampart, so I'm getting started on this now.  I forgot to take a picture on the name entry screen though.  Does that mean this score won't count?

Judges' call there. I'm guessing that they want the picture on the high score entry screen for further proof that it's the participant's actual score.

I went ahead and played a few more times and beat my previous score, so it doesn't matter now.  It's actually easier to take a picture at the name entry screen since there's no time limit.

17 million?! You are resetting after each game so the solar value resets, right?

Yup, I'm turning the power off then back on before each game.

Sadly this is not the best pinball video game ever invented. The best pinball video game is on Genesis, Dragon's Fury. A pinball game you can actually beat. Second place is a tie between Sonic Spinball on Genesis and the PC pinball game 3D Pinball: Space Cadet. Anything else is too far away to even be rated. I also don't have this game so that might have something to do with my rating system.

Please refrain from making comments like this.  It is not good for participation and only discourages it.

I've also made a change to the rules regarding the Solar Value. The actual pinball table holds the Solar Value in place after every Game Over, so it will be okay for this contest. No need to power off the NES after every attempt.

Same here ... pinball weeks are not my favorite. I have fun playing them but I get so mad trying to keep the ball alive whenever I'm chasing a high score. So probably another participation point week for me but maybe I can put up a respectable score.

Could someone explain what the Solar Value is exactly and how it affects your score? Does continuing to play after a game over actually give you a chance at a higher score?

If you shoot the ramp to the upper playfield, you add points to the Solar Value.  If you get Pin Bot to open his visor and activate multiball and shoot the ramp to the upper playfield while the visor is open, you will collect the Solar Value.  However, when you collect the Solar Value, you advance the playfield to the next level and the game has an added challenge to it depending on what level it is.  Level 2 adds a ball-eating monster to the middle of the table and level 3 adds spaceships that can grab your ball and fly off with it.  I've never been past level 3, so I'm not sure what is added for level 4 and beyond.

Continuing after you get a game over can give you a chance at a higher score depending on how many points you added to the Solar Value and if you collected it or not.  This is something that is in the original pinball table and not an actual glitch in the NES game like I originally thought.

Sounds like you got to level 4.  In level 3, the ships just shoot missiles at your flippers.  In level 4, they shoot missiles and can grab your ball and fly off.  The manual says there are 6 stages, but I've never been past level 4.
