Hello everyone and welcome to the latest installment of the Weekly Contests!  This week’s game is going to be Wizards & Warriors.  Here are the rules:

  • Play until Life 0 (no helmets remaining).  Once you get to Life 0, you must stop playing and take your picture.  Anyone suspected of playing the game on Life 0 will have their score disqualified.
  • Get as far in the game as possible
  • If two players get to the same area, the number of keys collected will break the tie (there's normally 3 keys in each area, pink, red and blue)
  • Lowest score takes precedence in the event of a tie (ex. Two players get to Area 3 with two keys each.  Whoever has the lowest score at that point in the game takes precedence)
  • Furthest progression wins with lowest score taking priority
  • GENRE: Action/Platformer

The contest ends Sunday, 11/1/15 at 11 PM NA time.  Your user name MUST be written or typed on a piece of paper and be in the picture for your score to be valid.  The entire TV screen, or computer monitor if you are playing on an emulator, MUST be in the picture for the score to be valid.  No partial screenshots will be considered or accepted.  No screenshots by hitting "print screen" on a computer will be allowed.  You must take a picture of your computer monitor.  There may be instances where this will be acceptable, but it will be at the discretion of myself and the contest organizers.  Also, the use of turbo controllers is forbidden, as well as any cheat codes, Game Genies, slow motion functions, or save states if playing on an emulator.  Also, we will only be using NTSC systems for the contests.  The use of PAL systems will NOT be allowed.  Good luck everyone and have fun

-------------------------

My NES collection count: 757 games (16 to go for a full set)

Latest Purchase(s): Snow Brothers

"Wait...Bimmy and Jimmy??  How'd they make a mistake like this!?  Bimmy isn't even a real name!"

Beware the Bimmy Marsh!

arch_8ngel handles the leaderboards. He usually updates them every few weeks when he gets time.

I figured that I might as well get a run in during halftime of the Steelers/Chiefs game.

If someone gets to the final boss, do you just take your picture there? The 50,000 points that you get for beating him, the 100,000 points for rescuing the princess along with the key/gem bonus would likely cause the score to max out otherwise.

I would guess you should only do that if your score is about to max out in your run. Speaking from experience, a maxout on this game should only happen if you're actively trying to score points.

Will the record holder be making a run at it this week?   Good to see you posting here!

Thanks.  Nope, no score from me.  Still happily retired here.

Just peeking in once in a while when I see a game that I like.  Wizards and Warriors and I go way back.  It's one of the very first NES games I ever played as a kid. Still remember freaking out when I saw all the bees near the end of the first stage.

Your in 11th with 26 points.
zobber is in 10th with 29.

I kind of keep track for myself so It didn't take much extra to figure out your spot. I could be wrong though.

The 'low life' sounds drive me nuts. It's too loud compared to the rest of the music.

First time getting to stage 2. This is a game I've had for years and occasionally popped it in. Honestly, without the manual, I wouldn't know what the hell was going on.

What does everyone else think about this game?  Just played through the entire game and used about 50 continues.  For a knight, he's not to good at swinging his sword.

I think it's pretty decent. It's got a neat mix of exploration, platforming, and enemies that attack you from irritating angles. If I was told I could only have 100 NES games for the rest of my life, it'd be one of the last games I'd choose to take, but it's certainly worth the price it's going for currently.

It can get really frustrating... in level 1, the flying enemies can really gang up on you. I always seem to be pointing the wrong direction while in mid-air, so I take a load of damage that way. Also, the physics seem a bit loose (not too bad though).... ascending the trees can be frustrating. Finally, as I mentioned in my score post, that damn "low life" sound drives me nuts. It's too damn loud.

Overall though, enjoying it. After the contest (or if I resign to a score/placing), I'll also do a full run with continues to see all this game has to offer. I don't imagine I'll get very far otherwise, hah.

If gutsman004 were here, he'd say (paraphrasing) that the hardness of this game is cheap and bull$h1t lol.  I played this game as a kid and I remember it being difficult. That hasn't changed with time. The difficulty really does come from the random assortment of enemies that bombard you form all directions. I don't particularly care for that, but it is what it is. I love the game concept, graphics, and most of the mechanics. I like the light RPG elements of collecting upgrades and items. Speaking of that, I think I'd be totally in love with a variation of this game that had heavier RPG elements. I think I prefer Wizards & Warriors II to this one, but I've not played it for a while either. Though I own it, I also have not tried Wizards & Warriors III. All-in-all, I'm pleased with this game as a contest choice. I think it is different and will be interesting to see how it plays out.

Glad to see some more scores posted! I have not played at all this week. I should get a chance but who knows? I have not beaten Level 1 before but I'm hopeful I can at least do that this week.

I played for maybe 20 min last night. I really just want to take a participant point but I don't think I can afford it

Plus I'm on vacation next week. So I'm probably taking a participant point then.

It seems like everyone is burnt out this week. I haven't played any more since I threw up that quick score Sunday afternoon. The Bearcats have a noon game Saturday so I might give it another shot after that, but I may just stick with what I've got.

I think unless you had this one as a kid or you really like jumping in games it wil be hard to stay intrigued for very long maybe it's just me.

And whats with the way this guy attacks? Lol. I do like the lil stab though.
