It's the risk we all take. Many other repros/brews have the rom publicly available. I guess we also have a bit of faith and trust here on NA.

Personally, I hope Dankay Kang stays this way, only 19 made. Otherwise everyone who gets one would be wasting their money, take me for example: I get one for $160, then a couple months later, they are being mass produced and being sold here for $20 each. The only thing that would resolve this is if he makes some sort of change to the ones made after this, so the ones that he is auctioning off now would still technically be very rare, since there are only 12 NA edition carts right now.

I share this feeling. I don't believe for a second that it's been erased, and I seriously doubt that the carts can't be dumped. Too bad I bid too low and can't dump it myself, now...

I just honestly want an explination on why the Rom can't be dumped. or the person who made the boards doesn't have the rom file anymore. With a little research and help from a few people, we've compiled this list that concerns us.

Feb 26
"I, being one who is knowledgeable in cars and not NES boards, put out an ad looking for someone to do some minor color work to the existing DK ROM, and dump it onto a chip for me. I was contacted by Proveaux on NA, and we discussed what i wanted. Basically, a blue ape that threw rings. He took the original ideas and ran with it. he ran long and hard. Before he was done, we had an awesome game lined up."

5-7 Comments from people asking for a copy.

Feb 27
"i appriciate all the interest, both in this thread and in PM's , but 4 out ofthe 5 copies have already been spoken for, they are getting shipped out to friends. I'm not looking at having any more made, but I will keep it in mind for the future.

IF i were to have more made (which i certainly am not planning for quite some time, if ever) i would only probably have made up 5-10 more. "

Feb 28
"Nope. My integrity is worth more than money. i said i wouldn't sell, and so im not going to sell. 4 carts are getting put in the mail today. "

Mar 1
"Ok peoples, heres what the whispers are saying. There "may" be a few more carts being made. They "may" be up on an NA auction. They "may" be slightly different than the originals. "if" they are for auction, there won't be enough for everyone. I will post more details as they come to light. "

Mar 6 - johnblueriggs
"If you don't want to make anymore, can you post the rom and label so we can make our own? "

Mar 27
"I'm making ten. They're getting auctioned, and then there will be no more. " "Auction on here. You guys asked for more carts, so I made more for you guys. "

April 25
"the short anser on the ROM? no, it wont be released. The long answer? the ROM died on my now corrupted hard drive, in the computer i tossed in the trash a month ago.

And when Proveaux wrote the original ROM, he set it up so that when it was dumped onto a cart, it could not be pulled off again."

May 1
"If i had a way of making more of these, and making them easily and affordably, i would definitely be mass producing them "
In response to mass production - "No can do. the original ROM's died on my last hard drive. "

Auction thread
"This is your ONLY chance at getting one. There are only a total of 19 of these carts made."

Say whatever you want, im holding firm on it.  i made the original run of carts for friends, i got loads of pressure to make more, so i made more.  Here they are, i lost my copy of the ROM, it doesn't matter because it was no longer going to be used.

In any case, you've stated your theory, and it's a beilivable theory, but not one that's going to happen.

thats the reason i stuck with a low number, instead of making 50 of them.

And here come the conspiracy theories. Seriously, guys. This started as a joke. I've known about it from the start, so trust me. Lee never intended for this to happen. It just happened. Not everyone is all about money. Not everyone sits at home and plots elaborate money making schemes. Sometimes, things just happen to fall into place for events like this to occur. You could almost say he simply won the lottery as far as the money he's raking in goes.

Thanks for writing. I apologize for the delay in responding to your email during this busy time of year.
In regard to your email, it is great to hear that you have found a copy of Perfect Dark for the Nintendo 64. Perfect dark was a first person shooter game that was released in May of 2000. I personally enjoyed this game a lot during my mid-teen years since it allows for up to four players to play at one time. All the Perfect Dark cartridges were black.

I hope this information is what you are looking for.

Response I received from Nintendo customer support when I asked if they knew any thing about a black Perfect Dark cart.

It's not too much of a conspiracy. He said Proveaux wrote the rom, not himself. so how is the original rom lost? It's sitting on the carts for sure if nothing else.

I am missing your point majesty. He said he doesn't have the ROM to give out and won't be making more carts. Yes someone could most likely pull the ROM off of one of the carts, but what are you trying to prove? What is there not to "like about the situation"?

It really sat with me the wrong way that he said he lost the rom when his computer died. Someone has to have it though. I can understand him not wanting to invest the time or money into making more carts. I'm perfectly fine with that, I wish he would've just said that honestly.

But saying the rom's just blatantly lost really sits the wrong way with me and seems like something's up there.

Edit: and I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way.

The OP didn't code the hack, when pressed on if he would release the rom he said no and that he didn't have it anymore.

That's really all that pertains to this auction and release. He said he's not going to release the ROM (and doesn't personally have it anymore) and won't be making more carts.

You our anyone's opinions on what should be done with hacked roms or how he worded his explanation of its current physical location really has nothing to do with this auction.

Back to the auction!

Man, I am okay right now, but bids are catching up!

Well since you like looking for conspiracies, let me help you out with one. What do you mean by this? The creator of the rom stated quite clearly he didn't want it released to the public. So you wanted to secure a copy so you could make your own copies? To sell them for a profit maybe? I have a hard time believing you wanted to make the rom publicly available for great justice.

Yeah, I'm just stirring up wild accusations here, but it's the same as what you're doing. Honestly, it just sounds like you are sore because you aren't getting a copy.

Why can't these messages be sent through PM? You guys are all thread crapping, which is against NA rules...

Back to the auction:
I am still debating whether I want to throw down a bid or not... Lee, good luck on the sale/auction...

Here's a new question: What would you like the first set of carts called?

I mean, the ones being auctioned off, to me, would obviously be Dankey Kang, NA Edition. So what would you like the first set referred to as so I could update my aftermarket price guide. First Edition is okay. Or I suppose I could just let it stay as Dankey Kang by itself.

Your thoughts?

Is that directed at me?

I'd "Sam Flynn" the shit out of that rom, as soon as I got my hands on it. lol
(yeah yeah, I referenced Tron Legacy instead of the original)

But I didn't bid high enough, so oh well. Worse things have happened than not getting to experience first-hand the strange blue awesomeness that is Dankey Kang.

Hats off to everyone involved in the making of this hack though, from gameplay vid to cart label, it looks great
