It'd be nice to have a checksum of those dumped games, that way in case another one surfaces and gets dumped you can cross reference to see if it's different in any way.

For example, a 0.8 version of Game X won't have the same cheksum of a 0.9 version of a game, and likewise for the final 1.0 version.

Unfortunately, protos don't always follow those rules.  For example:

The Lost Levels released a proto of Robin Hood the Legend of Sherwood Forest v1.00
I have a different proto of Robin Hood the Legend of Sherwood Forest v1.00

The differences between the two ROMs when comparing the checksum of each?
7,777

Protos be weird...

Dang...then just out of curiousity. Is it common practice for most proto collectors to dump their proto even if they don't share it?

I mean, for something like these- all it takes is just one flipped bit to be gone forever, right?

I have all my NES protos privately backed up for safe keeping. Plus I can play them on my modded Wii. 1 bad bit would not necessarily kill the whole proto.

I want to dump mine for safe keepings but getting or renting a CopyNES has been a very frustrating situation and so far I'm empty handed. Hopefully Retrozone will have them in stock soon so I can buy one.

I find it funny how people want you to dump roms so they can play them but they won't help out in getting the roms dumped. I will be keeping my Ninja Gaiden roms private once I have them backed up.

If you're expecting something in return for doing this sort of thing, you're going to be disappointed no matter what. It's thankless expensive work and at best you'll get a couple "cool, thanks!" replies to a forums thread.

I don't do this for the here and now, I do this because I have no way of knowing what's going to be important to archivists and historians 50 years from now, and I don't want games to die because I was too lazy or expectant in my lifetime to do something about it. That's motivation enough for me.

After putting in all of the work and dedication to get the protos I have a new found respect for guys like yourself that have done the same thing.

If I were to release the roms I would expect nothing in return.

Depends on the collector I suppose.  Matt and I got involved in proto collecting primarily for preservation, so of course every proto we've owned has been backed up.

Shane:  Easier said than done.  Once you get into dumping unreleased games, spending thousands and dumping for free, knowing that the value of the proto drops dramatically in value after doing so, you'll understand how difficult it is.  Hard on the wallet and heart, and nearly thankless.

Thankfully a member here is letting me borrow his NES which has a copynes installed so I can back my protos up. But yeah these bad boys will stay in my private collection for the time being. I don't have plans of dumping them to the masses.

Has the ROM for War on Wheels been released yet? I really want to play through it to see if there's credits.

What is it that you want to see?  I also own a proto of War on Wheels, I think it is the same build as the one that was repro'd.  I can search the credits if you'd like.

I just wanted a ROM of it at least. I'd probably be able to rip an NSF file of it, too. I know Paul Webb is the composer. I'm just wondering if the game has a staff list. Sculptured's other Jaleco title (MetalMech) did.

Where it was dumped? What do you mean? Like, what website?

We didn't really have one back then, it was the group that eventually spawned Lost Levels. I think we were more or less a ROM release group calling ourselves FeFeA at the time. This would have been...99? 2000? It was probably dumped by Kevtris.

EDIT: I'm pretty sure the only difference is a palette bug that happens during the "Mega Man got X power" screens, it isn't very exciting. But we were pretty excited at the time to finally outbid a collector on a prototype and get the ROM out there like the little ROM release pirates that we were. Yarrrr!

I don't know if we should categorize something that hasn't been found yet as "undumped." If so then that list is somewhere in the 200-400 range, depending on whether you want to count the rumor-only stuff and the games that were announced but never shown.
