As well all know, there are tons of platformers for the NES, some awesome, some not so awesome, but they all have that certain charm. I created this topic for you all to share your favorite platformers with others, and talk about what makes them the game they are.

I would have to say to me, Shatterhand is the perfect platformer for NES. The story is cool in that cheesy Robocop way, the music is just astounding, and the controls are just right for a game about punching people, animals, monsters, robots, and machines in the jaw. The graphics look great, the futuristic apocalyptic backgrounds are spot on, as are the bio-lab levels with the dark and dank corridors.

Some of the other better ones I've come across would have to be (other than of course the Marios, Ninja Gaidens, Double Dragons and other classics):

Shadow of the Ninja
Power Blade
Conquest of the Crystal Palace
Journey to Silius
Kickmaster
Wizards and Warriors
Ducktales 1 and 2
Adventure Island 1,2,3, and 4
Rush n' Attack

Those are just my own personal favorites, anyone have any other fun hidden gems to talk about?

One underrated platformer is Robocop 2. Many people don't like it (as it was demonstrated when it was part of the nesruler's contest), but I think it's great and challenging. The creators really made you feel you were controlling a super heavy man-robot without making it unsufferable to play.

EDIT: is there a clear definition of "platformer"? I feel Shatterhand does have platforming bits, but is mostly a sidescroller action game.

I kind of just use the term in a very broad sense to include any game that you go left to right (or vice versa) in and jump on things. I use it loosely. I really liked Robocop 2 also, thank you for reminding me to add that to my shopping list!

Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu is one of my favorite platformers on the system and it almost never gets mentioned.

Felix the Cat is a lot of fun, though much too easy. Definitely worth checking out.

Rockin' Kats rules! Super easy to start, but the bonus/last levels type deal at the end can get brutal at times.

Gargoyle's Quest II has a TON of RPG elements, but the meat of the game is a straight platformer. If you like 8 Bit platformers and action RPGs, you owe it to yourself to play this one.

Monster Party has some of the most bizarre characters I've seen in any NES game. Charming in an odd way.

Totally Rad gets my vote for best Boss sprites on the NES. Can be a challenge, but I really love this one. Absolutely ridiculous 90's slang throughout too!

Toki is a lot of fun, albeit a bit short. Definitely recommended.

Obviously, you can toss the Mega Mans, Little Samson, and a million other popular titles, but these are some that are excellent that you don't hear about every day.

I don't get all the love for Robocop 2. I had the game since I was a kid and it was frustrating as hell trying to get all the drugs only to end up doing a hard as hell shooting gallery and go back to the same level over and over again. Maybe I'm missing something but I'd just rather play the first or better yet, play Robocop vs The Terminator on the genesis with all it's bloody goodness.

My personal favorite platformer is Batman. The game just had really kickass music and the wall jump gimmick was awesome. I also really enjoy Rockateer which is basically a clone of it with the same swapping weapons thing going for it.

EDIT: Hell yeah Mark! Monster Party is the shit! I totally forgot to mention that one.

I dunno about the 1st one, but F2 is actually one of my more preferred platformers. Mini-games are fun in it, levels are cool, and it's neat to me. It's a very solid game IMO. Try it out if you can.

Another gem I just remembered is Ultimate Stuntman. I loved it, many people didn't really like it. But the music is what makes it awesome I think.

MrMark hit the nail with Jackie Chan. This game is awesome and fun... It has a balanced difficulty, and the animations are hilarious.

Jackie Chan is pretty freaking cool, I always thought the TG16 version was so much better though. I had it when I was a kid, I'll never forget the digitized voices.

WAKAHHHH

Edit: Now that I think about it, my parents got my TG and games for me on my birthday right when it all went on closeout because the system was done, best birthday ever, I got:

TG16 w/Keith Courage
Samurai Ghost
Jackie Chan
Tricky Kick
Bonk's Adventure
Bonk's Revenge

God that was an amazing birthday!

It's a very different kind of game. No hanging on the walls, the sprites are much bigger, and has great graphics. It's also a bit unfair at some parts, has zero exploration bits. Between platforming stages, there are "horizontal shootemup" parts, where Batman flies with a jetpack gunning down enemies. Oh, and Batman doesn't punch anyone, he only shoots with different kinds of weapons (which you can't store like in the first game). I like it overall.
